RIU Hotels and Resorts has announced the acquisition of a new hotel on Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco, expanding the company’s portfolio to another new city.

Mallorcan hotel group RIU Hotels and Resorts is adding another hotel to its RIU Plaza brand, this time with a new property in San Francisco.

We find out more about the upcoming Riu Plaza Fisherman’s Wharf.

RIU consolidates urban brand with new San Francisco hotel

RIU Hotels and Resorts has acquired a new property in the popular tourist destination of Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco. This hotel will be rebranded to become the RIU Plaza Fisherman’s Wharf and will give guests access to some of the city’s main highlights, including Pier 39, Chinatown, North Beach and Alcatraz.

Currently owned by the ACRON Group and operated under the Sheraton brand, the hotel is already in line with RIU’s international brand standards following an extensive refurbishment in recent years, so all that remains is to overlay the RIU Plaza brand identity onto the hotel.

Luis Riu, CEO of RIU Hotels & Resorts, spoke of the venture, saying, “This project is great news for RIU and for the consolidation of our line of Riu Plaza urban hotels. San Francisco is a great city with a very competitive hotel market and this acquisition places us in one of the best neighbourhoods with a quality product that fits perfectly with our business strategy.”

“Our objective is to attract mainly European and Latin American holidaymakers, who until now have found it hard to visit the city due to the lack of availability. Furthermore, it will help us secure our marketing in Asia, as it is a very popular destination there,” Mr Riu elaborated.

4-star offering in enviable destination

The RIU Plaza Fisherman’s Wharf will be a 4-star property boasting 531 guest rooms as well as ample meeting facilities to cater for conferences and corporate events, meaning that the hotel will appeal to both business and leisure travellers alike.

To cater more specifically to business guests, the hotel will become part of the Crown Level Lounge, and visitors coming to San Francisco for work will be conveniently close to the financial district and the downtown areas.

This property will mark the eighth hotel under the RIU Plaza brand and the third in the US. RIU Plaza also has hotels in Panama, Guadalajara, Miami, New York, Berlin, Dublin and Madrid, with plans to expand into Toronto and London soon.
