City Overview: Hamburg, Germany to get 48 new properties

Hamburg, home to Germany’s largest harbour and a fast-growing hotel market.

Germany’s major port city of Hamburg is home to a very robust hotel market which is set to see close to 50 openings in the coming years.

Hamburg has always been an economic powerhouse in Germany thanks to its harbour and the fact that many national and international companies have offices there.

While this and the city’s many cultural highlights have always attracted many visitors, Hamburg is looking forward to several years of exceptionally strong growth in the hotel sector.

The TOPHOTELCONSTRUCTION database shows that 48 new hotels with 9,635 new rooms are in Hamburg’s pipeline.

We take a closer look at these new properties.

Two promising years ahead

Of the 48 projects, 10 will launch next year while 16 will open in 2021, making the upcoming two years a strong season of growth for Hamburg.

So far only 4 hotels are set to debut in 2022 and a single one plans on opening its doors in 2023. At the rate things are going, these numbers could well increase though.

From 2024 things are looking quite rosy with a confirmed pipeline of 17 properties.

With 22 3-stars and 14 4-stars, the new hotels will mainly be in the upper-midscale and midscale sector. 8 new 5-star properties will welcome luxury travellers.

Hamburg’s fastest-growing brands

The most quickly expanding brand in Hamburg is the niu which will launch 5 projects with 1,229 new rooms. Moxy Hotels follows with 3 properties and 608 rooms.

Residence Inn by Marriott, Ibis Styles and Premier Inn will each open two hotels with Premier Inn bringing over three times as many rooms as Residence Inn.

Noteworthy hotel projects in Hamburg

By the end of next year, the HIP-Hotel Hamburg will become the city’s largest hotel with 600 rooms. Set in an enviable spot downtown and right on the water, this property will target business guests as well as leisure travellers.

Another new hotel was planned nearby but this property seemed to have had some growing pains. Let’s hope HIP-Hotel makes its planned opening date!

In Q2 2020 Moxy Hamburg Berliner Tor will welcome guests to a stylish abode in the heart of the city. While it mainly targets business guests, this lifestyle property will also be attractive to leisure travellers.

The niu Bricks Hamburg-Eppendorf which is set to open in early 2021 will combine all elements guests would associate with urban living and contemporary style. True to the brand’s signature theme it will blend perfectly with its surroundings and create a comfortable atmosphere for guests.
