After a turbulent 2020, the hotel industry is looking to 2021 full of hope for recovery and renewal, and our researchers have found that 434 hotel projects and 81,792 rooms are scheduled to come online in January. We take a closer look at the details behind these headline-grabbing figures.
Key growth regions in January 2021
Europe takes the lead on a region-by-region basis with 185 hotels and 31,814 rooms. North America follows close behind with 136 new properties and 23,742 keys.
Things look a bit slower in APAC where only 39 launches with 11,475 rooms are expected to be introduced this month. Africa takes fourth place with 27 openings and 4,317 keys, while 25 hotels with 4,043 rooms are on course to go live in Latin America. And the Middle East concludes our list with 22 schemes and 6,401 keys bolstering its hotel portfolio.
Of the 434 properties opening worldwide, the majority (302) will be in the four-star sector. The remainder (132) will be in the five-star segment.
National hotel markets taking off this month
The US is the strongest national growth market this month, with 112 hotels due to open, adding 17,582 rooms across the country.
In the UK, 55 projects with 8,673 keys are due for completion, securing the country second spot overall. Germany follows in third (24 openings and 3,508 rooms), China is fourth (23 properties and 6,099 keys) and France is fifth (18 hotels and 2,422 rooms).
Top five cities for hotel market growth
London tops the list with 16 new hotels and 2,719 rooms as the UK’s capital city continues to power ahead despite the many challenges it faces around Covid19 and Brexit.
Paris and York will each add eight properties to their portfolios this month, meanwhile, with 1,219 and 1,900 keys respectively. Rounding out the rankings, Dublin will get seven new hotels, and Dubai will welcome another six.
This month’s most active hotel brands
Hilton Worldwide looks to be getting off to a strong start in 2021, claiming four spots on our rundown of January’s five fastest-growing hotel brands.
Hampton by Hilton leads the pack with 15 hotels and 2,221 keys. Hilton Garden Inn follows with 11 launches, just ahead of Hilton Hotels & Resorts, which will open ten properties. Elsewhere, Radisson Blu Hotels & Resorts is planning eight openings, but Home2 Suites by Hilton is snapping at its heels with seven new properties on their way.
Noteworthy hotels opening in January 2021
Catching the eye this month is the 545-key Hilton Abu Dhabi Yas Island Resort in Yas Bay, a vibrant waterfront destination. The resort’s facilities will include a multipurpose conference centre, seven dining outlets and an innovative urban beach concept with an infinity pool suspended above the Arabian Gulf. The resort is also near the 18,000-capacity Yas Arena, an indoor arena designed to host major events including sports competitions, cultural performances, concerts and MICE activities.
Over in Denmark, Comfort Hotel Copenhagen Airport will offer guests easy access to both the capital and the airport. This 605-key property will boast several innovative features such as its XXL room sleeping eight guests; and a 24/7 Barception combining a front desk, a bar and a deli. A 3,000 sq m conference centre will also be nearby, making the property ideal for local and international business travellers attending events.
Lastly, the intriguing Hilton Rome Eur La Lama will be part of the city’s Nuovo Centro Congressi. This 439-room hotel will offer guests direct access to the congress centre’s 1,800-seat auditorium, with meeting rooms for a total of 6,000 attendees, as well as several restaurants. The whole complex features the latest energy-saving materials and uses renewable energy for heating and air conditioning.
