As one of the three host countries of the 2026 World Cup, Mexico is stacking its hotel pipeline to cater to demand from football devotees who will flock to the stadiums involved.
The major sporting event will kick off in June 2026 in 16 cities across the US, Canada and Mexico. Mexico’s contribution to the contest will be in three cities: Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey.
Sporting trio
The TOPHOTELPROJECTS database shows that ahead of the tournament, hotel chains are beefing up their offerings in the trio of locations.
Mexico City will welcome at least 13 new properties, comprising 2,048 rooms. Major developments in this region include Hyatt Regency Insurgentes Mexico City, adding 250 keys to the city’s offering in Q1 2023; the luxury 213-room Andaz Condesa Mexico City arriving by the end of this year; and Hyde Mexico City Del Valle, with 200 rooms arriving in Q1 2023.
Guadalajara will see at least five extra hotels delivering 708 rooms, while Monterrey’s four newbuilds will add 670 keys to its offerings.
Mexican wave
In Mexico overall, TOPHOTELPROJECTS details 128 new hotels that are underway, collectively representing 25,742 rooms. The established tourist coastal resort areas of Tulum and Cancun join Mexico City as the most popular destinations, with 13 projects each.
The pipeline is due to peak next year, with 48 projects due for delivery, following this year’s 38 openings. A further 16 hotels we have recorded in the database will open in 2024, while nine are scheduled for 2025 and another 17 are to be scheduled.
In terms of hotel segments, seven Mexican projects in the database are of three star ratings, while 47 are four star and the 74 five star properties dominate the listings.
