With over 5,300 new hotel rooms being added to Sydney’s market, the Australian city is broadening its offering for local and international travellers.
Sydney’s future as a travel destination looks bright which is why the city’s hotel industry is growing steadily.
22 new hotels with 5,319 rooms are planned for the coming years and are set to wow guests with impressive views and top-notch amenities.
We found out which openings to keep an eye on and who the key players are.
Steady growth lies ahead
For 2020, 9 hotel openings are planned in Sydney and will add 2,166 rooms to the market. 2021 will see 7 launches with 1,802 rooms.
As of now, 2022, 2023 and the years beyond still look slightly quieter with only 3 projects each, but it is highly likely that more will be added soon.
With most properties set to open this year and next, it’s no surprise that 12 of the 22 planned properties are currently under construction. One is already in the pre-opening phase and preparing to welcome its first guests soon. Of the remaining 9, 5 are in the planning phase and 4 are in the pre-planning phase.
Top hotel brands expanding in Sydney
Leading international brands opening hotels in Sydney include W Hotels, InterContinental Hotels & Resorts and Andaz with one property each.
All three fall into the 5-star luxury category. Overall, 10 of Sydney’s 22 new hotels will be 5-star hotels while the other 12 will have 4 stars.
Noteworthy hotel projects in Sydney
Launching towards the end of 2021, the Crown Sydney will be part of the Barangaroo South complex in Darling Harbour, an ambitious mixed-use development. The hotel will feature rooms and suites, luxury apartments, signature restaurants, bars, upscale retail outlets, a pool and spa facilities, conference rooms and VIP gaming facilities. Splendid views of the city’s skyline await guests on high-floor rooms.
Another interesting project in Sydney’s Darling Harbour area is the Crowne Plaza Sydney Darling Harbour slated to open in June 2020. It will be close to the new Sydney International Convention Centre and key business and leisure redevelopments in the Darling Quarter and the Barangaroo South precinct. The new hotel will feature a range of business and meeting facilities as well as a restaurant, bar, a gym and a pool.
Set to open mid-to-late- 2022, the Ritz Carlton Sydney will sit at the front of The Star casino complex overlooking Sydney Harbour. As guests might expect, the property will include a wide selection of dining venues and bars as well as lavish wellness and conference facilities.
