For this week’s Project of the Week here at THP.News, we’d like to tell you all about the modernization and extension of Gorfion Familotel Liechtenstein in Malbun, which officially began with a groundbreaking ceremony in April this year. The project marks the largest renovation in the hotel’s history and will continue until its planned reopening in the later part of 2026.
The existing hotel buildings are being extensively renovated, alongside the construction of a new extension. In total, 12,000 cubic meters of existing space will be upgraded, while a new building with a volume of 14,600 cubic meters will add further capacity and facilities. The architectural and interior design work is being led by Architektur Pitbau, who are helping to create a modern, family-friendly atmosphere with alpine charm.
Expanded facilities for families
The modernization focuses on families as the hotel’s core audience. Once complete, Gorfion will offer 70 family rooms and suites, many designed with separate children’s areas. New amenities include additional indoor and outdoor play areas, a large outdoor pool, a second pool with outdoor access, a water park for toddlers, and a water slide.
The Kids’ Club will be expanded and relocated to the first floor, featuring bright interiors and direct access to an outdoor terrace. Additional play zones will be available in the lobby, restaurant, basement, and outdoor areas. For adults, the plans include a larger spa and wellness area with massage and beauty rooms, a fitness room, and outdoor relaxation spaces.
Restaurant areas, including the buffet and kitchen, are also being redesigned and expanded to improve comfort and flexibility for families. Other upgrades include the lobby, ski room with direct slope access, and a larger buggy room.
Sustainability and importance for Malbun
Originally planned underground parking will not be built due to economic and environmental considerations. Instead, the hotel is working on a sustainable approach to make better use of existing parking facilities.
Gorfion is a central part of tourism in Malbun, generating nearly half of the town’s overnight stays. The modernization aims to secure the hotel’s long-term role in the region and support Malbun’s position as a leading family travel destination.
