Hyatt Hotels Corporation has revealed that Hotell Reisen in Stockholm will become its first property in Sweden, joining The Unbound Collection.

Hotell Reisen has become the latest high-profile establishment to join Hyatt Hotels Corporation’s ranks. We take a closer look at the details behind the Chicago-headquartered hospitality giant’s new venture.

Hyatt expands in the Nordics

The eye-catching announcement came after a Hyatt affiliate entered into a franchise agreement with First Hotel Reisen AB to open Hyatt’s first hotel in Sweden. Before joining The Unbound Collection by Hyatt in early 2021, the property is undergoing extensive refurbishment. However, the hotel will be available to book through Hyatt from 1 December 2020 on an unbranded basis.

Together, Hotell Reisen, the planned Grand Hansa Hotel in Helsinki and Hyatt Centric Reykjavik represent strategic cornerstones of Hyatt’s plans for expansion across Northern Europe.

Hotell Reisen is situated on the waterfront and Skeppsbron quay of Stockholm’s old town. The property is located within walking distance of Stockholm’s key attractions and has a history dating back as far as the 17th century.

“At Hyatt, we are focused on thoughtful growth based on locations that matter most to our guests, World of Hyatt members and customers, and Stockholm has been a priority market for some time,” said Peter Norman, senior vice president of development in Europe for Hyatt.

“While Stockholm is known for its high barrier to entry for global brands, the rich history and unique location in central Stockholm make Hotell Reisen a perfect addition to The Unbound Collection by Hyatt brand. This brand has seen great momentum across the region, as each property celebrates their destination’s distinct culture and atmosphere, and we look forward to expanding the brand’s footprint in the Nordics.”

A link to Stockholm’s past

The hotel’s name comes from a 1750s coffee house run by a Dutchman, Frederik Reiss. Making the most of its popularity among merchants and travellers, Reiss’ daughter started to rent rooms here in the 19th century. Since then, the property has acted as a hotel, and today it’s a valued part of Stockholm’s history.

“We are delighted to work alongside Hyatt for the first Hyatt hotel in Sweden,” said Anders Moe, CEO of Host AB, which owns First Hotel Reisen AB. “In creating a destination that locals and guests from afar will treasure, Hotell Reisen will honour the history of the building and the city. The combination of our expertise in Sweden’s hospitality market and Hyatt’s international reputation will allow for our vision to come to life.”

The Unbound Collection by Hyatt was created out of the belief that every property has a story to tell. Through the collection’s hotels, Hyatt immerses guests in the history and culture of each location.

Other European hotels in the portfolio include Great Scotland Yard Hotel, Hôtel Martinez, Hôtel du Louvre, Hôtel du Palais Biarritz, Párisi Udvar Hotel Budapest and Hotel Sofia Barcelona. Byblos Hotel and Grand Hansa Hotel are set to open in 2022.
