Over 200,000 rooms are in Marriott’s pipeline and will cement the group’s position as the world’s leader in terms of rooms and hotel brands.
According to the TOPHOTELCONSTRUCTION database, Marriott International currently has 977 projects in its pipeline which will add 221,783 rooms.
We find out more about when and where these hotels will be launched and how the current international health crisis is impacting openings.
Planned hotel openings in the coming years
Marriott International was supposed to open another 381 hotels with 84,855 rooms in 2020. However, in light of recent events, the launches planned for the coming months have been put on hold.
In a recent video message, CEO Arne Sorensen announced that all new hires and openings were currently suspended, and the group was fully focused on getting associates and stakeholders through this crisis safely.
Whether the 381 planned new hotels (or some of them) can be opened this year strongly depends on how the situation around the coronavirus develops in the coming months.
Moving more openings to 2021 would add to the 222 projects currently on the books slated to add 44,167 new rooms.
2022 should see 134 hotel launches with 34, 771 rooms and another 240 projects are signed off for 2023 and beyond.
The focus here lies on the 4-star segment which will get 517 new hotels while 460 properties will be in the 5-star category.
Top growth regions for Marriott International
Unsurprisingly Asia Pacific and North America top this list. With 383 planned hotels, APAC beat North America (381) by only 2 hotels but a total of 16,827 rooms, meaning properties in Asia will overall be larger.
Europe follows in a very distant second place with 76 new hotels and 14,439 rooms. The Middle East will see 63 hotels open, adding 18,736 rooms to the market while Africa will get 52 new hotels and 11,489 rooms. South America concludes the list with 22 openings and 4,086 rooms.
Marriott’s fastest-growing national hotel markets
Marriott’s home base, the United States, is the clear front-runner here, with 330 projects and 66,589 new rooms planned. China comes in second with 243 hotels and 63,560 rooms slated to open soon.
Japan, India and Saudi Arabia follow with 27, 25 and 22 hotels respectively. Australia and Mexico will each see 17 projects launch while the UAE, the United Kingdom and Thailand will get 16, 14 and 12 hotels each.
Marriott’s most quickly-expanding hotel brands
The company’s signature brand, Marriott Hotels & Resorts leads the pack with 110 projects adding 30,929 rooms to the portfolio. Courtyard by Marriott will get 91 new hotels and Four Points by Sheraton will grow by 73 properties.
Sheraton Hotels & Resorts and aloft Hotels will get 69 and 64 new properties respectively.
