Brand overview: InterContinental to grow room count by more than 16,000 [Infographic]

Going through the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database, we see that the luxury hotel brand has ambitious expansion plans, especially in APAC and the Middle East.
In the coming years, InterContinental Hotels & Resorts will open 71 hotel schemes with a total of 16,785 rooms, according to our researchers. We take a closer look at the pipeline of the world’s largest luxury hotel brand.
InterContinental openings by year
For the remainder of 2021, 11 launches are still scheduled to take place, bringing 2,487 more rooms into play.
Another 24 projects with 5,680 rooms are due for completion next year. But 2023 looks a bit quieter though, with just 16 planned debuts set to contribute 3,714 keys to the brand’s footprint. A further 20 schemes and 4,904 rooms have already been mooted for 2024 and beyond, although more are likely to be added nearer the time.
Key growth regions for the brand
This prestigious brand is focusing the lion’s share of its upcoming launches on APAC – 40 projects with 9,012 rooms are expected to go live across this vast region soon. Half of them (20 schemes and 4,454 rooms) are in China alone, making it InterContinental’s fastest growing domestic market, well ahead of Thailand (six new properties and 1,166 keys) and the US (five hotels and 1,402 rooms).
The Middle East is next on the regional leaderboard with 11 ongoing projects and 2,459 keys, followed by Europe, which will get nine more InterContinental properties encompassing 2,571 rooms. Meanwhile, North America accounts for seven schemes and 1,782 keys, while Africa rounds things off with three hotels and 639 rooms.
Top InterContinental projects to add to your watchlist
The new InterContinental Colombo in Sri Lanka, set to open in early 2022, is our first pick in terms of projects worth keeping an eye on. This 42-storey hotel will offer 307 luxurious rooms and suites a short drive from both the airport and the city centre, as well as impressive meeting and banqueting facilities spread over 12,000 sq ft. A variety of leisure amenities, including a spa, a gym and several dining outlets, will also be at travellers’ disposal.
Down in Australia, InterContinental Sydney will complete an extensive refurbishment just a short time after its Sri Lankan counterpart in Q2 2022. All public areas, function spaces, restaurants and 509 guestrooms and suites will be revamped to offer the very latest in technology and design. These proposed upgrades represent the most significant set of improvements to the property in over three decades.
Finally, we travel up north to Japan, where InterContinental Okinawa Chura Sun Resort will open its doors by early 2023. This newbuild resort, consisting of a hotel wing and a villa wing, will offer vast open spaces showcasing InterContinental’s signature design aesthetic. Its proposed facilities include four restaurants, a bar, banquet rooms, meeting facilities, a large hot spring, a fitness centre, a chapel, and indoor and outdoor pools.
