April 2021 overview: 50,000 new hotel rooms set to complete [Infographic]

by | 01 Apr 2021 | Projects

During the course of the month, the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database shows that almost 50,000 hotel rooms will go live around the world, fuelled by a strong showing from the US and Europe.

After a challenging year, the hotel industry will welcome 260 new openings with a total of 46,137 rooms globally in April 2021, according to our researchers. We take a closer look at these imminent arrivals.

April hotel openings by region

North America tops the list here with 86 planned openings and 15,679 new rooms, although Europe comes in a close second with 80 launches and 12,329 keys. Things are moving a bit slower in APAC, where 46 projects and 9,434 rooms are due for completion.

Elsewhere, the Middle East will get 22 additional properties with a total of 5,072 keys while 18 openings with 2,539 rooms will go live in Africa. Latin America concludes the list with eight upcoming launches and 1,084 rooms.

Of these 260 schemes, two-thirds (174) will fall into the four-star category, with the remaining third (86) in the five-star segment.

Lots more properties on their way in the US

On a country-by-country basis, the US leads the field with 71 openings and 12,524 new rooms being planned.

China and Germany follow a long way behind, with 19 launches apiece and 4,555 and 3,242 keys respectively; this shows that properties in the People’s Republic will on average be significantly larger than their counterparts in Europe’s largest economy. Interestingly, China’s also home to the city with the most openings this month, Nanjing, where no fewer than five projects are scheduled to come online.

Meanwhile, the UK is not far behind, with 14 new hotels and 1,892 rooms incoming – its capital London is particularly busy, accounting for five launches and 1,014 additional rooms alone. Finally, India will get eight new hotels with 962 rooms.

Top hotel brands growing this month

Hampton by Hilton will open ten hotels with 1,532 rooms in April, bagging it top spot in our brand rankings.

By way of comparison, Marriott International’s flagship brand Marriott Hotels & Resorts will add six properties with 1,802 keys to its portfolio. And another member of the Maryland-headquartered hotel giant’s extensive portfolio, Courtyard by Marriott, will grow its footprint by five hotels and 881 rooms.

Noteworthy hotel openings in April

The 336-room Comfort Hotel Solna, a new energy-efficient property in Sweden, is one of the most exciting properties set to launch in April. This innovative hotel will use geothermal energy for heating, while solar panels on the roof and façade will actually provide more energy than the property can consume. Plus, its angled design by White Arkitekter of Stockholm will make the brick building really stand out from the crowd.

In Saudi Arabia, Hilton Garden Inn Riyadh Financial District will soon offer 260 rooms in the heart of the city’s business area. The scheme will share a building with DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Riyadh – Financial District, which will provide a range of accommodation options from studios to one- and two-bedroom apartments.

Finally, over in Vietnam, Crowne Plaza Phu Quoc Starbay will open on the remote island of Phu Quoc. Both the island’s main town as well as the airport are only a short drive away, making it the perfect place for corporate and leisure events. The hotel will offer 300 modern rooms, a wedding chapel, a ballroom for up to 240 guests, a variety of F&B venues and direct beach access.
