The most recent Project of the Week on THP.News is the upcoming Balladeer Hotel, a Tribute Portfolio hotel. Located in Mount Airy, North Carolina, this new hotel project by Marriott International is expected to open in January 2026.
It will offer 70 guest rooms, upper and lower lobby lounges, a self-service tap wall, a boardroom (hidden behind a bookcase for a secretive touch—which feels like the perfect excuse to be Sherlock Holmes for a day), and a media room. Most famous as Andy Griffith’s hometown, Mt. Airy has a rich legacy that embraces its role as “America’s favorite small town.”

Interior vision inspired by local heritage
Rooted in the concept of “A Lyrical Thread,” The Balladeer Hotel blends Mt. Airy’s textile mill legacy with its deep ties to Bluegrass music. Designed by Interior Image Group, the hotel aims to reflect the town’s richly layered stories through thoughtful, narrative-driven design.
This storytelling comes to life through the interior design, which incorporates plaids and argyles across textiles, carpets, tile patterns, and wallcoverings, along with spool-of-thread-inspired forms in headboards, lighting, and furniture. Custom metal panels at the front desk and handmade glass tiles in the lounge were created by local artisans, while each guest room features unique touches, such as hidden patterns and argyle wallcoverings inspired by a former mill worker’s tale of crafting the most complex sock design in the factory.
Additional key design elements include the following:
- Salvaged original wood flooring, brick walls, and exposed beams and structure on the ceiling
- Restoration of the mill’s original spiral staircase, which now sits as a piece of art in the Media Room
- Rotating displays of art by local artists
- Wall art installation inspired by musical records and the strings of a banjo
- Bleacher-style seating, creating a casual environment for watching performances
With its deep sense of place and layered storytelling, The Balladeer Hotel is positioned to become a one-of-a-kind destination that honors Mt. Airy’s past while inviting guests to discover its present. We look forward to following its journey to completion.
