Germany’s Maritim Hotels has added another country to its expanding international portfolio, signing to open a resort in Italy under the brand.
From April 2025, Maritim will operate the former Aldiana Club in Villapiana, on the coast of Calabria in southern Italy. The 324 room resort is set within nature with rolling olive groves lending an air of exclusivity to its setting.
An all-inclusive offering
Maritim has promised a five star service at the all-inclusive resort, which will provide guests with a broad range of activities and choices, whether looking for a sporty time or simply somewhere to relax in the sun. “As a Maritim Resort, we’ll continue to provide an all-inclusive experience with a wide range of sports, daytime activities, a kids’ club for children of all ages and evening shows” said Peter Wennel, managing director of Hotel Management Services, part of the Maritime Group. “A high quality of service, outstanding gastronomy and warm hospitality are our core values.”
Maritim’s portfolio consists of 25 hotels across Germany, plus a more modest presence in a number of other markets that are destinations for Germany travellers. It has three hotels each in China and Albania, and two in Bulgaria, as well as properties in Egypt, Malta and Mauritius.
The Italian addition to the portfolio follows the launch in summer 2024 of the Maritim Hotel Amsterdam, a 579 room property within a 110 metre tall tower that is something of a landmark in the Dutch city. In common with many other Maritim properties, it features extensive conference and congress facilities, with space for up to 4,400 delegates.
For Maritim, the move into the Italian market is another positive growth step, after a successful 2023 that saw the business rebound fully after the Covid pandemic. Revenues for full year 2023 grew to EUR377m, up EUR77m on the previous year with occupancy up an average 11% and room rates 7% stronger.
The group is working hard to improve the sustainability of its portfolio of hotel properties, having teamed up with consultants ClimatePartner. As an owner-managed business, it is easier to implement positive changes, after measuring current water and energy consumption, and waste production. The group also committed to adding electric vehicle charging, making it available to guests at all of the group’s hotels.
Building a Chinese base
Maritim launched its first hotel in China in 2010, and now has three properties there. While the hotels predominantly welcome a Chinese clientele, two of the group’s latest hotels there are within the Taicang region, which the Chinese Ministry of Economic Affairs has designated as a base for Chinese-German business co-operation. Already, more than 400 German companies have established local offices in Taicang, cementing the theme.
The Maritim Hotel Taicang Garden opened its 257 rooms to guests in 2021, and was followed by the 2023 opening of the Maritim Hotel & Conference Centre Taicang, another five star property with 150 rooms, and meeting facilities to address the needs of travellers in the region.
