Sam Coulstock is taking over the responsibilities of this high-profile position at the Institute of Hospitality, the sector’s international professional body, from Alistair Sandall.

Having taken up the post of head of professional development at the Institute of Hospitality (IoH) on 23 August 2021, Sam Coulstock succeeds Alistair Sandall, who is leaving the organisation after a successful four-year stint.

A new face on the IoH executive team

The founder of social enterprise Inspired Community Group, Sam Coulstock, has taken on the role of head of professional development at the IoH, which has branches throughout the UK and overseas.

“I am delighted to be joining the Institute of Hospitality at a time when our industry needs to change, grow and develop,” he said. “Continuing professional development will be critical for our members to succeed in a fast-changing world. It’s an exciting time for the institute, and I am honoured to be part of the journey and to help the industry I love dearly.”

Robert Richardson, chief executive of the Institute of Hospitality, added: “Sam is a fantastic addition to our executive team. At a time when the institute and industry need it most, Sam brings his enormous experience in education, training and careers.

“He knows our industry inside out and has been an active fellow of the institute. I’m also proud to say that I have worked closely with Sam in the past, and have seen first-hand his professionalism and passion. He makes things happen. Welcome to the team, Sam.”

Relevant industry experience

For this role, Coulstock will draw on his 25 years of experience in hospitality operations, business development, apprenticeship training and careers for The Springboard Charity and Springboard UK among others. He was behind various initiatives including the nationwide ‘Big Hospitality Conversation’, which created over 60,000 jobs, apprenticeships and work experience opportunities, and from 2016 to 2020 served as business relations director for Umbrella Training.

His consultancy business has set up Kickstart programmes for organisations employing young people in hospitality over the past year. In addition, his voluntary work includes ten years as vice-chair of HR in Hospitality and a place on the editorial board of the IoH’s quarterly members’ magazine HQ. And in November 2020, Coulstock launched the Inspired Community Group.

Meanwhile, Coulstock was named Enterprise Advisor of the Year in 2020 by the London Enterprise Adviser Network. He’s also a fellow of the IoH and a member of the Institute of Employability Professionals.

At the IoH, Coulstock will drive the institute’s mandate for lifelong learning through ongoing accreditation, mentorships and the organisation of professional workshops, while cultivating relationships with employers, universities, colleges, training providers and careers organisations.
