The Sol Durres
A look through the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database shows that Meliá Hotels International has ambitious expansion plans, primarily in the APAC and European markets.
In the coming years, Meliá Hotels International will open 45 new hotel schemes with a total of 11,238 rooms, according to our research. Here, we take a peek at the Spanish hotel group’s pipeline and pick out some of its hottest projects.
Meliá’s hotel openings by year
For Q4 2021, seven projects with 1,978 keys remain to be completed, while 15 properties with 4,021 rooms will go live in 2022. Ten openings with 1,972 rooms are pencilled in for 2023, and 13 more properties with 3,267 keys are on the books for 2024 and beyond.
Of Meliá’s 45-strong portfolio, the vast majority (37) will be in the four-star segment, leaving relatively few (eight) targeting the five-star category.
Key growth regions for Meliá
Like many international hotel companies these days, Meliá’s focusing its growth plans on APAC – 20 new hotels with 5,021 keys are on the cards here. Europe is the chain’s second fastest growing region, with 12 projects and 2,360 rooms currently on its development slate.
Five properties with 1,749 keys are being progressed in Africa, followed by the Middle East, where four projects with 931 rooms are steadily advancing.
Elsewhere, North America can look forward to the opening of three hotels with 1,061 keys, and Latin America is awaiting the arrival of just one property with 116 rooms.
Meliá’s three most active hotel brands
The group’s signature brand, Meliá Hotels & Resorts, wins the distinction of being its most active overall, with no fewer than 27 projects and 7,201 keys on their way.
Innside by Meliá ranks a distant second, with eight new properties and 1,547 rooms. And Gran Meliá Hotels & Resorts concludes our rundown courtesy of its tally of four planned launches and 932 keys.
Noteworthy Meliá openings to watch
The first hotel to draw your attention to is Meliá White Sands Hotels & Spa in the Republic of Cape Verde. This 835-key hotel complex will be split into family and adult-only sections – among the many facilities being promised are two separate children’s pools, a baby pool, an adventure playground, a kids club, a wet bar, a poolside restaurant, fine-dining outlets, a relaxing lobby bar, a sumptuous champagne bar and a vibrant sports bar. Its opening date is set for early 2022.
In Q2 2022, meanwhile, Meliá San Pietro Resort Durres will open right on the sandy coast of Albania. This 350-key hotel will offer a variety of restaurants and bars, as well as a fitness centre and a large onsite spa. On top of this, there’ll be conference facilities, shops and even a casino.
Meliá certainly seems to see plenty of potential in Durres, since it’s planning a second eye-catching launch there in Q3 2022. The Sol Durres will open as a 383-key holiday hotel once the full renovation of what’s presently known as the Tropikal Resort is complete – two new buildings will be added and existing facilities such as the pools and gardens will be completely redone. Its notable amenities will include an à la carte restaurant, a beach club, a wellness area, a fitness centre and meeting rooms.
