We explore Mandarin Oriental’s spectacular outpost in Dubai, showcasing significant contributions from the likes of DAR, DesignWilkes, Silverfox Studios and Kaldewei, in our latest TOPHOTELDESIGN exclusive.
Mandarin Oriental Jumeria, Dubai, which opened in February 2019, is a striking design-led newbuild hotel that’s successfully managed to make a name for itself in one of the world’s most competitive luxury hospitality markets.
A landmark hotel overlooking the Persian Gulf
Developed by wasl Asset Management Group, established by the Dubai Real Estate Corporation in 2008, Mandarin Oriental’s scheme boasts 256 rooms and suites, many with private balconies and terraces offering spectacular views across the Persian Gulf. The hotel lobby is well worth admiring too, filled as it is with a colonnade of 14 artificial trees, each glittering with 900 lights, and cooling white marble floors. There’s also a fitness centre and a kids’ club, while events can be hosted in either the 650 sq m glass-walled ballroom with beachfront terrace, or four well-appointed meeting spaces.
One of the property’s most impressive features is its state-of-the-art 2,000 sq m destination spa, a complex whose curved ceilings pay tribute to the rolling dunes of the desert, while the blue hues on display in the flooring call to mind the crystalline waters outside. This oasis of calm offers guests a range of revitalising heat and water experiences, alongside indulgent rejuvenation and water treatments. Its nine stylish treatment rooms benefit from having individual changing and bathroom facilities too, including some with private terraces.
Signature dining from José Avillez and Ross Shonhan
Food-lovers certainly won’t be disappointed by Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai, which features no fewer than six restaurants and bars, each with their own distinctive design aesthetic and ambience. Star billing goes to its two signature restaurants: Tasca, the first international venture by Portuguese Michelin-star magnet José Avillez, offering indoor and outdoor dining on a terrace with a striking infinity pool; and Netsu, a warayaki-style Japanese steakhouse from top Australian chef Ross Shonhan, with bold interiors combining concrete and wood with Kabuki art-inspired decorative touches.
This extraordinary hotel was brought to life by a stellar team that included DAR (architecture), DesignWilkes (interior design), Silverfox Studios (interior design) and Kaldewei (bathrooms).
