A beautiful cliffside hotel, brought to life by a team that includes architect Bonaventura Gambardella and interior designer Nikita Bettoni, has opened in one of Italy’s tourism hotspots.

The new Borgo Santandrea sits in a breath-taking spot 90 m above sea level.

Mediterranean gastronomy and Italian design

Thought to be the first new luxury hotel to open on the Amalfi Coast in 15 years, Borgo Santandrea has now launched following a three-year overhaul of an existing cliffside property near the town of Conca dei Marini. The passion project of the Orlacchio brothers, this attractive scheme pairs classic Mediterranean style with mid-century design details, and boasts its own oceanfront pool and jetty.

A blue-and-white colour scheme distinguishes the development, which is home to 29 guestrooms and 16 suites, along with three restaurants serving modern Mediterranean cuisine – La Libreria, Alici and The Beach Club – and two bars located between the highest points of the hotel. Michelin-starred executive chef Crescenzo Scotti leads the hotel’s culinary offering.

Maurizio Orlacchio, general manager and co-owner, said: “We are so excited to open the doors to Borgo Santandrea. It has been a beautiful challenge, over the past three years, to restore the property and I feel proud to have brought so many talented artisans and iconic Italian brands together to create a one-of-a-kind hotel that is truly made in Italy. We feel Borgo Santandrea is much more a home than a hotel and we look forward to welcoming our first guests this summer.”

A celebration of local artisanship

Taking inspiration from the 1960s building’s origins, the owners have highlighted the site’s mid-century details, while also instilling a homely feel that’s unmistakably Italian. A team of designers, including architect Bonaventura Gambardella, interior designer Nikita Bettoni and kitchen designer Andrea Viacava, helped realise the owners’ vision, reflecting the craftsmanship of the Campania region.

Borgo Santandrea’s interiors are now home to handcrafted works by Amalfitano artisans, Heritage Collection pieces by Molteni&C and custom furniture by Tosconova and Lisar. Interestingly, the hotel features 31 different types of geometric handmade and hand-painted tiles, which pay homage to the region, as well as white Italian marble from Puglia, Veneto and Tuscany, and hand-blown glass lamps from Venice.

These are complemented by vintage items now restored with fine Italian textiles, alongside Once Milano linens and Dedar and Rubelli textiles that recall the Tyrrhenian Sea. All guestrooms also come with floor-to-ceiling windows and Acqua di Parma toiletries.

The landscape architect Philip Adiutori then created the property’s garden terraces, which stay true to the surrounding landscape with their flora. Walkways and staircases, as well as a lift, lead down the cliffside to the hotel’s stunning private beach.
