Marriott International’s upscale business-focused hotel brand Courtyard by Marriott has unveiled its new European design strategy at the renovated Courtyard Berlin City Center in the German capital.

The brand’s evolved ‘European Spirit’ design approach spotlights the use of natural materials and textiles with fresh-looking finishes, creating a modern and functional environment exuding contemporary European style, with localised accents representing the destination.

Neutral and natural

Reimagined by Swedish interior design group, Living Design Sweden, Courtyard Berlin City Center brings the new design approach to life following an extensive renovation.

As travellers arrive, they are welcomed into the airy lobby with a neutral colour palette, accented by a mix of natural materials such as marble, oak and brass to give the space an enveloping warmth. Passing by the welcome pedestals for check-in, guests will step into a lounge area furnished with a wood-panelled display wall, contemporary light fixtures and armchairs upholstered in cognac brown leather and classic tweeds.

The lounge features a communal table where guests can interact or work beyond their guestrooms, and Courtyard’s signature Media Pods that offer semi-private workspaces to boost productivity. Additionally, the lobby is home to The Market, a retail concept by Courtyard that features a broad selection of grab and go culinary delights, beverages, and travel essentials.

Tailored accommodation

The hotel offers 267 redesigned guestrooms, studios, and one-bedroom apartments equipped with a kitchenette, designed with an emphasis on flexibility and a smart layout tailored to the needs of modern travellers.

Decorated in calming neutral tones, the upscale guestrooms honour the locale with wall prints and a mirror panel featuring illustrations of the Berlin skyline. A modern platform bed is anchored by a soft green upholstered leather headboard. Soft blue woven vinyl flooring is responsibly made of recycled materials and a soundproof layer of coconut fibres underneath soft blue soundproof flooring made of recycled woven vinyl materials such as fishing nets and coconut fibres.

Lounging and technology

Guests can take advantage of the hybrid lounge seating with an oak desk that provides a corner to lounge or work. In addition, the guestrooms also feature a soft cognac brown luggage bench that integrates with a smartly designed unit, which serves as a wardrobe with a full-length mirror and a cupboard.

The room offers modern connectivity with various USB charging ports for digital devices. In-room entertainment is provided with the 55-inch HDTV that features a casting function for streaming movies or music from guests’ mobile phones or tablets. The new RFID locking system allows guests to enter their rooms via a digital room key on the Marriott Bonvoy Mobile App.

Empowering guests to maintain their wellbeing routine on the road, the hotel’s upgraded fitness centre is open 24/7, offering state-of-the-art Technogym cardio and rowing equipment supported by both Technogym and Skillrow mobile apps, a dedicated weightlifting area, in addition to a hydration station for guests to rest and refuel.

Evolving legacy

Sandra Schulze-Potgieter, vice president, premium and select brands, Europe, Middle East and Africa at Marriott said: “The unveiling of Courtyard by Marriott’s new vision at Courtyard Berlin City Center demonstrates how our legacy brand continues to evolve to meet our guests and our member’s needs. By 2024, we plan to have five hotel openings that showcase the new design.

“The refreshed design standards show our commitment to ensure we create a contemporary, design-driven space for both leisure and business guests to connect, socialise and make the most of their stay, while also capturing the essence of each destination.”

Future Courtyards

Courtyard Berlin City Center is being joined by another five new hotels that will exemplify the brand’s design transformation in Europe by 2024, including the just-opened Courtyard Biel/Bienne in Switzerland.

Anticipated openings include Courtyard Yerevan in Armenia, Courtyard Lyon East in France, Courtyard Milan Linate and Courtyard Turin in Italy.
