Scandic hotels has signed a long term lease on its first hotel in the Swedish mountains

Scandic Hotels has signed to open its first hotel in the Swedish mountains. The property in Salen will feature ski-in, ski-out facilities during winter months.

The new build will have 120 hotel rooms, as well as 16 apartments suitable for groups or families. It will be developed for property owner Lima Besparingsskog, on a plot midway between the towns of Tandadalen and Hundfjallet. The aim is to provide access to both family friendly skiing, as well as some more challenging slopes to satisfy experienced skiers.

An attractive mountain destination

“We’re very happy to be able to welcome guests to our first Scandic hotel in the Swedish mountains,” said Scandic CEO Jens Mathiesen. The company is no stranger to operating mountain hotels, already branding properties in similar locations in both Norway and Finland.

“Our growth strategy is clear,” added Mathiesen. “We want to strengthen our position in the Nordic countries by expanding in attractive, new locations. Salen is an established and popular destination with great demand from both Swedish, Nordic and international visitors, which we intend to leverage.”

In its design, the hotel will feature some classic Alpine elements. The wooden facade will feature bedroom balconies facing the mountains, while the ground floor will feature welcoming fireplaces, behind a glazed facade. There will be a wellness facility with pool that features both indoor and outdoor elements – and several types of sauna too.

Environmental concerns will be taken seriously throughout the design and construction of the hotel. The completed property will be certified under the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, reckoned to be one of the toughest of measures. All products and chemicals used will be eco-labelled, while the building will use 100% green electricity. In operations, steps will be taken to eliminate single use packaging, to cut water use, and minimise the carbon footprint of the hotel’s menus.

Ahead of completion of the hotel, installation of a new ski lift is planned, making it easy for guests to join the main slopes. such destinations also enjoy strong warm season business too, as visitors take to the mountains for hiking and cycling.

Building the brand across Scandinavia

The new ski hotel joins a pipeline of hotels lined up for Scandic, across a number of European markets. In Norway, there are projects under way in Tromso, and the town of Ski. In Finland, the 174 room Scandic Helsinki is well under way, and due to open in autumn 2025. There’s also a hotel in Rovaniemi being planned, plus Scandic Hotel Garden Helsinki. And the group is also keen on the German market, where it has a hotel under construction in Stuttgart, plus a further property planned in Berlin.

Scandic is also developing a second brand with a more economy feel, Scandic Go. Six pipeline properties have been lined up, including sites in Helsingborg, Helsinki and Jonkoping.
