Victoria + Albert Amiata bath in RAL 5003
How Victoria + Albert are bringing colour back to the bathroom
Blue is the Colour Bolder colours are returning to bathrooms. White has dominated luxury bathrooms for years, a neutral palette for sharp, minimalist designs. Perhaps a generation of designers was scarred by 1970’s avocado suites. The new generation of coloured bathrooms offers more choice and flexibility, allowing for sophisticated colour schemes.
At Victoria & Albert baths, we had already seen the strong emergence of blue as a bathroom colour, and this has been reinforced by Pantone, who made Classic Blue their 2020 Colour of the Year. They describe the tone as ‘Suggestive of the sky at dusk, with reassuring qualities’, which makes it ideal for creating an atmosphere of serenity in the bathroom. The re-emergence of coloured baths gives designers new options. Victoria + Albert make it easy to specify, by offering a choice of 194 RAL colours that can be easily matched to wall coverings or fabrics.
Bathrooms look much more coordinated if the bath and basin match, so all Victoria + Albert basins can be coloured to match the bath specification. A degree of subtlety can be introduced by opting for Matt rather than Gloss – again, this is available across all 194 colours.
Although blue is undoubtedly en vogue, the association of blue to water and its natural calming effect make it a timeless choice for a bathroom. The challenge for a designer is choosing just one – there are 25 different blues on the RAL chart.
