A startling new design from 2LG Studio, showcased at the London WOW!House event, hints at the future of bathroom design.

A number of major design shows have been cancelled over the last two years, so it was exciting to see a new event launched this Summer at the Design Centre in London. The WOW!House exhibition was described by the organisers as an ‘immersive design experience, where visitors can walk through room after room of imaginative wonder, each space created by one of 20 acclaimed interior designers, working closely with renowned makers and international design houses.’

The House of Rohl – a family of luxury bathroom and kitchen brands including Victoria + Albert baths, Perrin & Rowe, Shaws of Darwen and Riobel brassware – took responsibility for the only bathroom in the showhouse. Partnering with Jordan Cluroe and Russell Whitehead of 2LG Studio, two designers known for their fresh thinking and bold concepts, the aim was to produce a truly unique space, with new ideas for bathroom design.

Jordan and Russell described their concept as a ‘Cave of Wonders’. During lockdown many of us came to see the bathroom as a sanctuary, both for the body and the mind. Taking this a stage further, this bathroom offers a sensory experience akin to a holiday, a separation from the ties of everyday life. A space to escape to and indulge in.

The two designers have a long term obsession with Malachite and cobalt that ‘took them down a rabbit hole into a space filled with rich hues and stalactites’. Jordan explains, ‘We kept coming back the word Escapism and the lush greens and blues of swimming pools and foliage of Italian Holidays.’   Stalactite lights and a stalagmite table were commissioned from artist James Shaw, and their remarkable extruded shapes, made from recycled plastic, create a moment of pure theatre.

Beneath the lights are Victoria + Albert’s Amiata baths and basins. A personal touch from Jordan and Russell, who have an Amiata bath in their own bathroom. Normally available in a choice of 200 RAL colours, 2LG challenged Victoria + Albert to create a special ombre paint effect. This creates the impression that the baths and basins are growing organically from their base. Riobel’s award-winning Parabola brassware, mounted above a marble vanity, provides the final touch of luxury.
