Two Spanish hotel companies, Melia and Summum Hotel Group, have agreed to partner on a fourth project together.
The pair will deliver a new hotel on the island of Mallorca, which will surely become a firm favourite among those who enjoy a game of golf. It will sit alongside the renowned Santa Ponsa I golf course, which first opened in 1977 and, with a par of 72, is a championship standard course that has hosted no less than seven European championships over the years.
A reimagined golf hotel
The 88 room property will open in 2026, following a substantial refurbishment of the existing hotel on the site, carried out in partnership with owners the Nigorra group. Architect Alejandro Palomino will be responsible for designing the transformation of the property, which originally opened in 1977. Amenities at the reimagined hotel will include a rooftop bar with great views, a spa with several swimming pools, and modern meeting rooms.
Summum Hotel Group will be responsible for managing the new hotel, which will be branded under the Melia Collection, a luxury brand within the Melia stable. Described as a handpicked selection of hotels with character, the collection currently features 15 hotels in Europe, plus many more around the globe. In Europe, there are already two Mallorcan hotels in the collection, being the Finca Ratxo, a rural retreat in the hills, plus the Summum Boutique Hotel, a contrasting urban property in the heart of old Palma.
Summum and Melia are working on a further hotel project together, the Melia Collection Ronda. This property will open in the Malaga region in 2026, as the first five star hotel in the town. Next year, Melia will also launch the latest hotel in its collaboration with tennis player Rafa Nadal. Zel Madrid will be created by imaginatively refurbishing and reshaping an existing, 175 room city hotel on the city’s Gran Via. Currently the Zel brand has hotels open in Mallorca and at Tossa del Mar, on the Costa Brava, with pipeline projects including Zel Punta Cana, Zel Sayulita in Mexico and a project on Albania’s Mediterranean coast, at Zel Vlore.
Meeting growing tourism demand on Mallorca
Also planning to add a newcomer to the hotel offering on the island of Mallorca is Germany group NUMA. It is planning to open the 150 room ANNUA Signature Hotel on the island, with a planned launch in 2026.
As an international hotel group, Melia has a strong pipeline of new hotels upcoming, across Europe and further afield across its full portfolio of brands. During 2025, it expects to open in Boa Vista, on Cape Verde, in Cuba and in Montenegro. European openings include ME by Melia hotels in Lisbon and Malaga, and an Innside hotel on the Greek island of Crete.
