In this collaboration with TOPHOTELDESIGN we look at the 2021-completed Sequoia Lodge in Crafers, Australia.

David Frazer led the architectural design of this property and Georgie Shepherd Interior Design was behind the hotel’s interiors.

A connection to the locale

Last year saw the launch of this adults-only luxury lodge in the highlands of the Adelaide Hills in South Australia. The sanctuary is a part of Mount Lofty Estate and one that is named after three giant Californian Redwood trees planted by the original owner, Arthur Hardy, that are still on this land.

Views of the Piccadilly Valley, known for its fields of vines, are taken in from the lodge’s 14 luxurious and sustainably designed suites.

Shared spaces within the lodge include spring-fed stone hot pools, an infinity pool, spa and campfire amphitheatre. Guests of Sequoia can dine at the three-hatted Hardy’s Verandah Restaurant.

The lodge’s Experience Hosts guide guests in activities introducing them to the region’s food and wine, wellness, nature and history, adding to the lodge’s sense of place.

A tranquil retreat

The hotel’s panoramic suites stand out for design features including sunken lounges with stone fireplaces, king-size beds with moon windows, balconies with daybeds, a hidden television, elevated free-standing bathtubs, switch-glass windows and heated floors.

Each suite is also decorated with an original oil painting by the resident artist Stephen Trebilcock known for focusing on local native florals.

Local suppliers, artisans and craftsmen took part in the decoration of these suites, which are designed to provide a tranquil oasis with a calming colour palette, wood and stone.

Each space includes artisanal pieces and amenities from brands such as Nick Mount glass, JamFactory ceramics, Jurlique products, Hahndorf Soap and OrganiQ bath salts.
