We take an in-depth look at the ongoing development of a new 187-key hotel in Colombia, which will operate under Accor’s Sofitel brand.

Sofitel Calablanca Baru will be a luxury five-star newbuild resort near the popular Caribbean destination of Cartagena. The project is slated to open in the second quarter of 2021.

Caribbean dreams at Sofitel Calablanca Baru

Accor’s Sofitel brand will score a hattrick in Colombia when its third property in the Latin American country opens in the middle of next year. The Sofitel Calablanca Baru scheme is located just south of the sweltering coastal city of Cartagena on the picturesque Isla Barú.

Speaking in 2019, Philippe Trapp, executive vice president of the luxury and upscale brands of Accor in South America, said: “As the first international brand of luxury hotels created in France, Sofitel is recognised as a world ambassador of French art de vivre, so we are very excited to arrive in Barú with this chic and modern international project.

“Our goal is to attract luxury travellers to eat, sleep, enjoy, travel, stay, celebrate and live the French way at Sofitel Hotels & Resorts through the brand passions of design, gastronomy, art and culture, and wellbeing. That will also contribute to the development of tourism in one of the most important destinations in the region.”

The Barú complex will join Sofitel Bogotá Victoria Regia and Sofitel Legend Santa Clara as part of Sofitel’s portfolio in Colombia. Accor has teamed up with Patrimonios Estrategias Inmobiliarias, Cementos Argos and Arquitectura y Concreto for the delivery of this ambitious project.

Arquitectura y Concreto added: “The development of the city of Cartagena de Indias is constantly expanding within the new limits of the real estate market and the island area of Barú is a place with a lot of potential. Sofitel Calablanca is in a privileged place along the 7km sector of Porto Nao, on the shores of the warm Caribbean Sea, in front of a white sand beach, with spectacular views.”

A slice of paradise in Colombia

There are lots of reasons to get excited about this compelling proposal. Situated on an island just off the shores of a national park in one of the most beautiful places in the world, Sofitel Calablanca Baru will be a 187-key resort combining the resplendent nature of the region with the exclusive service and offering synonymous with Sofitel.

The hotel will consist of the main building with its expansive common areas, surrounded by more intimate lodgings housing each of the 187 rooms, including 23 suites. There will be three onsite restaurants, six bars, four swimming pools and ample meeting, conference and events space.

Sofitel is the only French luxury hotel brand with a presence on five continents.
