by | Jan 23, 2019 | Uncategorized

Trump Hotels grand expansion plans stall

by | Jan 23, 2019 | General News

Construction in Cleveland behind schedule, causing delays for property opening to be managed by Trump Hotels

Soon after Donald Trump became president of the United States, his eldest sons Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. — said to have been taking over his businesses — announced plans to open a new line of hotels called Scion.

In recent months, however, progress has slowed. A Scion hotel in Cleveland, Miss. is nearly an entire year from being complete, while the first two American Idea hotels—which are located in the same area—are not likely to open until later in 2019.

Hotels in Trump heartlands

Scion is aimed at catering to a growing segment of the hospitality market: young and hip travellers.

The idea behind the Trumps expansion was to build these hotels in parts of the United States where Donald Trump has many supporters. The first location for a Scion hotel opened in the Mississippi Delta in the early months of 2018.

The Trump sons also developed a second line of hotels called American Idea, with three in Mississippi and more than a dozen in other parts of the country.

In total, the Trump Organization announced preliminary agreements related to 39 new properties, marking the most significant idea for the sons to expand the family business. They billed as a push into markets that had long been overlooked.

Progress slowed

In recent months, however, progress has slowed. A Scion hotel in Cleveland, Miss. is nearly an entire year from being complete, while the first two American Idea hotels—which are located in the same area—are not likely to open until later in 2019.

In addition, there has been little evidence of any projects outside of Mississippi.

Meanwhile, the Trump’s company has been targeted by federal court cases and it has also lost deals in some markets where partners have complained about the viability of the Trump brand.

Other partners involved with the Scion project in Cleveland, Miss. have told the media that while plans remain to complete it, they have spent money to rework Scion so that it will be better able to attract events such as meetings, concerts and festivals to the area.

That property is intended to be a 100-room hotel, and so far it is half-completed on its 17-acre site.

Plans call for it to be surrounded by 10 other buildings that will house restaurants and event space, totalling a cost of more than $20 million.
