Boutique Hotel Awards
The winners of this year’s Boutique Hotel Awards were announced on November 8th in the Merchant Taylors’ Hall, London. The nominees included some of the world’s most stunning hotel designs, and spanned entries from Finland and El Salvador to Thailand and India. The over 300 hotels that were entered into the various different categories were judged by industry professionals, travel journalists and hospitality and travel experts. The winner of the Best New Hotel in the World was the Hotel Grand Windsor in Auckland, New Zealand. Part of the M Gallery boutique hotel collection by Sofitel, the Hotel Grand Windsor also took home the prizes for Australasia’s Most Inspired Hotel Design and Best New Hotel in Australasia.
Hotel Grand Windsor’s winning renovation
The hotel is located in an incredible Art Deco building that dates from 1928. Originally built as the Windsor House, the ten storey property was the city’s first skyscraper and was known to locals as a popular tea room, bakery and restaurant.
In 2000, the building was transformed into a 3-star hotel, but a recent renovation in 2017 brought it from a 3-star to a 5-star property in just under a year, at which point it became inducted into the M Gallery by Sofitel family. The restoration and renovation brought the building back to its former glory of when it was built in the golden era of design.
While giving their adjudicating result, the judges praised the retreat quality of the hotel, saying, “The design was beautiful, elegant, understated and calming. It felt a world away from the hustle and bustle of the central city; it was amazing how you could just step away from it.” The hotel’s 79 guest rooms and suites provide an escape from the world beyond, and are designed in an elegant and sophisticated manner which characterises the overall atmosphere of the property. Tastefully designed suites executed in a neutral palette create a feeling of calm and indulgence, easily allowing the guest to forget about life outside the hotel.
