Mandarin Oriental celebrates theatre of Lake Como in new Italian property
Magnificent views over Lake Como to the Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como
A former opera singer’s residence has been transformed into a Mandarin Oriental hotel overlooking Lake Como
A stunning new Mandarin Oriental hotel on the eastern banks of Italy’s glamourous Lake Como is straight out of a theatre set.
Given that it was the former home of opera singer Giuditta Pasta, it’s no wonder it is fit for a diva.
We take a look inside the transformed property which has been overhauled to bring it in line with Mandarin’s signature style.
Luxurious glamour on the shores of Lake Como
The description of Mandarin Oriental’s hot new hotel on Italy’s famous Lake Como reads as follows: “Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como offers five-star lakefront splendour on the sunlit shores of Lake Como. Coupled with its serene setting, nestled between luxuriant botanical park and lake, the resort represents a seductive blend of Italian style, oriental charm and natural beauty.”
If the summary alone doesn’t have you chomping at the bit to get a taste of the grand old Italian life, then perhaps the fact that this stunning property used to be owned and lived in by renowned 19th-century opera singer Giuditta Pasta will.
All the history and glamour of this era remains in the spirit and grandeur of the residence, but Mandarin Oriental have made sure to leave their stamp on the property and make it their own.
Mandarin Oriental brings timeless style to Lago di Como
Before Mandarin Oriental came along, this 19th-century villa was very much still a product of its time.
The interior decoration was sumptuous and decadent, with heavy velvet drapes, lush carpets and heavy furniture being the order of the day.
However, this is not what Mandarin Oriental was going for in their version of the perfect Lake Como property.
For them, it was about focusing on the property’s details and period features and putting the lens firmly on the star of the show, the lake itself.
The villa’s 73 rooms have all been given the Mandarin makeover, and this lighter touch can be seen in the more neutral colour palette, the minimal furnishings, fixtures and finishes, and the re-focusing of the guest’s gaze out onto the lake.
Visitors can enjoy the view from one of the pools that are dotted around the property, one of which even floats directly in the lake.
Relax and rejuvenate in the hotel’s state of the art spa and dine in one of the hotel’s restaurants which serve up classic Italian fare with a contemporary twist.
