Umbral, Curio Collection by Hilton marks the soft brand’s first foray into the Mexican capital

A unique, historic property in Mexico City opens as Umbral, Curio Collection by Hilton, marking the inaugural hotel in this selection of carefully curated properties in the country’s capital.

We find out more about Curio’s debut in Mexico City.

Hilton’s Curio Collection expands across Latam

Curio Collection, Hilton’s soft brand composed of unique and carefully chosen properties across the globe, has made its debut in Mexico City with Umbral, Curio Collection by Hilton.

This hotel cements the brand’s identity as a luxury selection of premium properties in some of the world’s most desirable destinations.

It also forms part of Hilton’s planned expansion of the soft brand further into the Latin American and Caribbean market.

Jorge Giannattasio, senior vice president and head of operations, Caribbean and Latin America, Hilton, said, “As we continue to strategically expand our presence across Latin America, Mexico remains a priority as one of our fastest-growing markets in the region.”

“The opening of the distinguished Umbral, Curio Collection by Hilton reinforces our mission to be the world’s most hospitable company throughout this incredible country, in the light of our 100th anniversary,” Mr Giannattasio elaborated.

A stunning restoration perfect for Curio

The building in which the new Umbral, Curio Collection by Hilton is housed in a historical structure which has undergone extensive renovation works as part of a city-wide restoration program of historic buildings.

Given the hotel’s location overlooking some of downtown Mexico City’s most important edifices, including the Metropolitan Cathedral, the County Hall and El Palacio de Hierro Department Store, and with the city’s Zocalo main square just two blocks away, it is no wonder so much attention is being paid to this area of the city.

The historic building’s new incarnation is the brainchild of local architect Javier Sanchez, who opted for minimal design in neutral colours and tones in the common areas and executed each of the 59 guest rooms in darker, more intimate tones.

The hotel also boasts an in-house art gallery, which displays artworks from both known and emerging local artists.

Further, guests can take advantage of the hotel’s intimate library, enjoy the vinyl selection in one of the 12 suites, or visit the in-house cinema which screens favourites from Mexican filmmakers, as well as international titles.

Mark Nogal, global head, Curio Collection by Hilton, spoke of the decision to site Umbral in Mexico City, saying, “Recognized as the No. 1 city to visit this year by National Geographic, Mexico City has continued to remain a focus in our brand’s expansion to destinations where today’s travellers want to go.”

“We look forward to introducing travellers to our unexpected and authentic Curio Collection experiences that truly embody the local culture, while we also prepare for the opening of our second in-market property with Hotel Lafontaine later this year,” Mr Nogal explained.

Let’s take a look at a few more upcoming hotel projects by the Curio Collection in LATAM:
