We review Aman’s efforts to bring wellness-oriented hotel brand Janu to Japan with a landmark scheme in the ambitious Toranomon-Azabudai Urban Redevelopment Project.

Luxury hotel group Aman is working to create a very special property in the Japanese capital.

Urban revitalisation

Aman announced plans to join forces with developer Mori Building on the Toranomon-Azabudai Urban Redevelopment Project in central Tokyo back in February 2021, resulting in the creation of a new luxury hotel and branded residences.

Janu Tokyo will feature 120 hotel rooms while Aman Residences, Tokyo will boast 91 branded residences. The former is to occupy floors 1 to 13 of the B-2 District Tower and is being designed by Denniston, while the latter is earmarked for floors 54 to 64 of the A District Tower with architecture by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects and interiors courtesy of Yabu Pushelberg. Heatherwick Studio is handling the landscape design.

World-class design

It’s envisaged that all of Janu Tokyo’s rooms will boast views over a central square filled with lush greenery. Scheduled to open in Q1 2023, this under-construction scheme will also feature Japan’s largest spa – at 3,500 sq m – along with a fitness centre, six restaurants, bars and a café.

Aman launched Jana in March 2020 following two years of R&D. Geared towards rekindling the soul, the wellness-oriented hotel brand aims to achieve harmony by dynamically balancing opposites.
