Throughout 2021, the hospitality industry continued battling the lingering challenges of the pandemic. Low occupancy rates, revenue drop, staff shortage were among the most persistent ones. Although in 2022, the industry has started to bounce back, PwC, Skift and other industry research platforms have remained cautious in their predictions regarding the full industry recovery.

Looking at the EMEA region, let’s zoom in to the UK market. A hotel in downtown London generated an impressive £350K in approved revenue through upselling. As Oaky software automatically sends upselling deals to each guest pre-arrival, it makes sense to measure the effectiveness of each email in terms of how much revenue it brings. Thus, the best performing hotel in terms of revenue generated per pre-arrival email became a hotel located in Edinburgh with an average of £9.28 per email.

The best performing deals included ‘Breakfast throughout the stay’, ‘Late check-out’, and ‘English breakfast’. The most popular room upgrades were ‘Suite on the top floor’, ‘Suite’, and ‘Garden or river view room’.

APAC Upselling Results and Best-performing Deals

Looking at the results of the APAC market, located on the other side of the world, a conclusion can be made that upselling is universally beneficial no matter the location.

A top-performer hotel from Singapore generated $340.3K ($14.77 per email on average). A luxury resort, which hit $20.5K in approved revenue, had the highest average revenue per email sent at $221.66.

Upselling preferences of the APAC guests differed from those in the EMEA. That said, APAC travellers were opting for ‘Credit for F&B’, ‘Secure parking’, and ‘Playground access’ upselling deals most often. Upgrades to the ‘Executive room’, ‘Executive King Suite with Lounge Access’, ‘Deluxe King Room’ topped the list of the best-performing room upgrades.
