Luxury brand Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts is turning its attention towards Asia for its hotel developments, with a majority of its pipeline dedicated to the continent.
Historically, the Canadian company has concentrated on its home North American portfolio, but a number of upcoming hotels will tip that balance in favour of Asia.
Rapid expansion
Currently Four Seasons operates 127 hotels in nearly 50 countries around the world. According to the TOPHOTELPROJECTS database, there are at least 49 projects comprising 9,621 keys on the way.
Around 42% of the five-star group’s open sites – 53 locations – are in North America, compared to 40 (32%) across Asia Pacific and the Middle East.
Continent switch
In the coming years, 26 more resorts are planned throughout Asia, and only nine in North America, taking their respective totals to 66 and 62, switching the brand’s leading continent.
Drilling down into individual countries’ pipelines, China tops the list for Four Seasons with 11 entries, ahead of the USA on five and Saudi Arabia on four. The only global cities with more than a single development are China’s Sanya and Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah, with a pair apiece.
Next year peak
According to our data, openings will peak next year, with at least 13 scheduled. The pipeline dips a little in 2024, with just six deliveries, before a slight rebound in 2025 of seven completions. Three sites are due to debut by the end of this year, while the remaining 20 are either slated for further ahead or are yet to be designated opening dates.
These developments come as Four Seasons made a swap at the top, with Alejandro Reynal, the former CEO of Hyatt Hotel Corporation’s Apple Leisure Group, succeeding the tiring John Davison, a 20-year veteran of the luxury group, as president and CEO.
Ones to watch
Notable projects on the slate include Four Seasons Hotel Osaka in Japan, adding 175 keys in Q1 2024. This will be part of mixed-use development, One Dojima Project, located in a 49-storey tower, set to be one of the tallest buildings in Osaka.
Another mixed-use site underway in Asia is Four Seasons Hotel Hangzhou Center. The Hangzhou Center will be anchored by two towers, containing the 200-key luxury hotel, due for completion in Q4 2023.
