The TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database reveals that Sydney’s hospitality scene will grow by 21 hotels in the years ahead, thanks to strong growth from the four-star category in particular.

Sydney’s hotel market is set to welcome 21 additions and 5,156 keys in the coming years, our researchers have discovered. We find out more about the city’s pipeline and profile some major openings that you may want to keep an eye on.

Steady growth in Sydney’s hotel market

Seven hotels with 1,801 rooms are due to open in Sydney in 2021. Only one of them is in the pre-opening phase, however, while the others are still under construction. Two more properties, both of which are currently being built, are due to open in 2022.

Meanwhile, four new hotels have been pencilled in for 2023; three are in the early phases of construction while one is in the last stages of planning. And eight further properties are in the works for 2024 and beyond, all of which are currently in the planning or pre-planning phases.

Of Sydney’s 21 hotel projects, 12 will be in the four-star segment, while the remaining nine fall into the five-star category.

Top hotel openings in Sydney

Set in the heart of the city’s CBD, the 252-key Citadines Walker North Sydney is at the epicentre of Sydney’s commercial, retail and social scenes. The hotel will cater to business and leisure travellers and be close to key public transportation infrastructure, including a train station, a ferry wharf and the new Victoria Cross metro station, expected to open by 2024. Citadines Walker North Sydney will offer apartments as well as a restaurant, meeting rooms, a business centre, an executive lounge and a gym. The opening date is set for late 2022.

Also worth highlighting, Sydney’s City Tattersall’s Club Hotel will be a 100-room property in the CBD, opposite Sydney Tower. Due for completion in Q3 2023, the proposed hotel will have two function rooms, a day spa, a fitness centre, restaurants, a bar, a café and an entertainment zone; club facilities will include a lap pool, a snooker room and a dance room. City Tattersall’s Club is investing AU$178 million into the scheme, which will feature a hotel, a club, commercial spaces and 267 residential units.

Elsewhere, and according to the most recent plans we’ve seen, the Western Sydney Community and Conference Centre will boast a 153-key hotel. Once it opens in Q3 2021, it’ll be the only hotel of this standard west of Parramatta, offering facilities including a restaurant and bar, each with private dining rooms, and a ground-floor café. Unbranded at present, the hotel will service the 1,250 sq m Convention Centre, capable of hosting trade shows, exhibitions and seated functions for up to 1,000 guests. A pre-function space opening up onto two acres of landscape gardens will also be available, while a slightly smaller 1,200 sq m community centre with an outdoor terrace will sit directly above.

Last but not least, and set to open by mid-2022, the Crown Sydney Hotel Resort at Barangaroo South will be part of the world-class, mixed-use Barangaroo South complex in Darling Harbour. A new tower will feature 350 hotel rooms and suites, luxury apartments, signature restaurants, bars, luxury retail outlets, a pool, spa facilities, conference rooms and VIP gaming facilities. Wilkinson Eyre Architects, Bates Smart and Meyer Davis Studio have been tasked with creating this extravagant project for Lend Lease and Barangaroo Delivery Authority.
