Mondrian Gold Coast, showcasing the talents of Elenberg Fraser and Studio Carter among others, will become SBE’s inaugural hotel in Australia as well as the country’s first Mondrian-branded property.

The ambitious Mondrian Gold Coast is one of nine new Mondrian properties that SBE plans to open around the world by 2022, with six more openings still to be announced. We find out more.

A first for Australia

Hotel group Accor and hospitality company SBE have together unveiled proposals to create the new landmark property. The luxury hotel and branded residences are to be built at Burleigh Heads Beachfront on the Gold Coast, in collaboration with Vitale Projects.

“We are excited to announce the opening of our first Mondrian hotel and residences in Australia with our partner Accor,” said Chadi Farhat, chief operating officer for SBE. “With five open properties, nine in development, and six more to be announced, Mondrian has established itself as one of the strongest brands in the SBE lifestyle portfolio, showing staying power for the long term.

“The Gold Coast has grown into one of Australia’s leading travel destinations and the opening of Mondrian Gold Coast is the next step in our strategic global expansion for the Mondrian brand, selecting communities at the heart of the most exciting cultural destinations in the world.”

“The expansion of the first-ever Mondrian into Australia with its location at Burleigh Heads reflects Accor’s commitment to developing innovative, lifestyle-oriented hotels alongside our partner, SBE,” added Simon Mcgrath, CEO for Accor Pacific. “With the Mondrian brand, SBE creates destinations within the destination, bringing together regional authenticity with sophisticated design, creative programming and a lively bar and restaurant scene.

“Mondrian Gold Coast will be the embodiment of this philosophy: providing residents and guests with elevated hospitality experiences that match the beauty and vibrancy of Australia’s Gold Coast region.”

A new coastal landmark

The dual-tower development is to be constructed on a 43,453 sq ft expanse of beachfront. Thanks to its position on the corner of First Avenue and The Esplanade Burleigh Heads, the hotel will benefit from being located in one of the area’s most desirable neighbourhoods, with 262 ft of ocean frontage giving guests and residents direct access to the white-sand shores and famous surf.

Here, one tower will incorporate 89 luxury residential apartments while the other houses a 208-room hotel. These two towers will be connected by a three-level podium providing space for communal areas including restaurants, swimmings pools, a spa and a fitness centre overlooking the beach and Burleigh Headland National Park.

“It has been our long-term vision to develop a premier beachfront destination and residential address along the Gold Coast,” explained Chris Vitale, director for Vitale Projects. “SBE leads the industry in creating unique lifestyle hospitality experiences and this partnership allows us to bring the services, style and strengths of the Mondrian brand to guests and residents of our community, setting a whole new benchmark for service and hospitality on the Gold Coast.

“Hotel-branded residences are gaining steam around the world, and with very few true luxury branded residences in Australia, prestige property buyers at Mondrian Gold Coast will have the rare opportunity to enjoy the benefits of a private residence with full access to elevated hotel amenities and services.”

Architectural and design excellence

This scheme combines the expertise of several of Australia’s most noteworthy architectural and design firms. Multi-award-winning architect Elenberg Fraser has designed the hotel and residential tower with striking arches, waterscapes and both vertical and horizontal gardens, fusing the area’s laidback beachside lifestyle with world-class facilities. And internationally acclaimed hospitality design consultant Studio Carter has been commissioned to oversee the property’s interior design using contextual inspiration from nature.

The forthcoming property reflects Mondrian’s plans for strategic expansion in partnership with Accor. Other upcoming openings include soon-to-be-announced properties in the Dominican Republic, the Maldives, Germany, Puerto Rico, Vietnam and Thailand.

SBE plans to open 50 new hotels by 2022, including nine under the Mondrian brand.
