Data from the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database highlights that Switzerland’s hotel market will grow steadily in the coming years, with the country’s main cities and tourist hotspots leading the charge.

Switzerland’s hospitality scene will see plenty of interesting developments over the next few years. Our researchers have found that 64 hotels with 8,188 rooms are currently on the cards across the nation.

Switzerland’s hotel openings by year

Six Swiss hotel projects with 962 rooms are still due to open in the last few weeks of 2020, of which five are already in the pre-opening phase.

A further 17 properties with 2,072 keys are slated to welcome guests for the first time in 2021, while another 12 hotels and 1,845 rooms will complete in 2022. For 2023 and beyond, 29 more projects with 3,311 rooms are in the pipeline.

The focus among the new properties will be on the four-star segment, which will gain 44 hotels in total. The remaining 20 logged by our team fall into the five-star category.

Key growth regions in Switzerland

The two commercial and economic hubs of Geneva and Zurich take the lead with six new hotels each and 1,318 and 1,015 keys respectively.

Elsewhere, Basel and Grindelwald will both get four new hotels with 537 and 310 rooms each.

Top brands expanding in Switzerland

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts will add three hotels and 522 rooms to its home market, the database suggests, making it the fastest growing brand in the country.

However, it’s not the only brand with more than one project up its sleeve. Radisson Blu Hotels & Resorts and IntercityHotel will open two properties apiece, with 580 and 536 keys respectively.

Outstanding hotel projects in Switzerland

Audemars Piguet Hotel des Horlogers, which has been pencilled in for mid-2021, is one of the most exciting openings we can look forward to. This 50-room hotel will be owned by the luxury watchmaker and set right next to the company’s museum in the town of Le Brassus. CCHE Architects of Lausanne and BIG of New York were tasked with the property’s design and construction; one unusual feature we already know about is a continuous, sloping outdoor corridor that’ll connect the rooms, facilitating visitor and service circulation. The hotel will also offer two restaurants, a bar, a spa and a conference centre.

Overlooking the enchanting village of Grimentz, meanwhile, Hotel Inalp & Spa benefits from an exceptional location with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks from all 79 rooms. The owner, Guernerés Résidences, invited a team of four interior design and architecture firms to create the hotel’s modern appearance, all while using regional materials and focusing on renewable energies and natural light. The opening date is set for Q2 2021.

Also not to be overlooked, Albergo Diffuso Corippo will offer 12 upscale rooms in the small mountain village of Corippo within the Italian-speaking area of Switzerland from early 2021. As part of the project, a former restaurant is being renovated and expanded to serve as a hotel reception, dining room and multi-purpose room. Five houses in the village centre are also being restored and set up to accommodate guests. When complete, the entire village will have been restructured into a hotel by Fondazione Corippo 1975.

Lastly, and set to be completed in Q2 2021, the new 266-key IntercityHotel Zurich Airport will offer a restaurant, a bar and just over 450 sq m of conference facilities; guests will have access to a spa and gym too. IntercityHotel’s latest outpost is conveniently positioned at Rümlang Station, right next to the airport grounds. From here, Zurich International Airport can be accessed in only ten minutes, and the city centre is just 15 minutes away.
