W Chengdu, which boasts 297 rooms and suites plus audacious visual flourishes from Glyph Design Studio, has opened its doors in Southwest China.

The movers and shakers of the Chinese tech industry now have a place to eat, sleep and play in style with the opening of W Chengdu.

Innovative dynamism

Located in the city’s Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone – otherwise known as the ‘Silicon Valley of China’ – the new 297-key property, which is owned by KWG Group Holdings, is a bold addition to the W Hotels portfolio and sets the stage for creative entrepreneurs and stylish trendsetters to shine.

“The city is breaking the mold of tradition and reinventing itself at every corner, making it a perfect fit for our newest W hotel in China. The opening of W Chengdu marks an exciting milestone for Marriott International’s portfolio of luxury brands to expand further into this part of the country, and W Chengdu is poised to become the social centre of this exhilarating city,” said Henry Lee, president, Greater China, Marriott International.

The interiors are the work of international outfit Glyph Design Studio. Its playful design narrative – which the studio named ‘Du’titude’ – takes its cues from Chengdu’s transformation, merging its storied history and recent resurgence with the W brand’s typical sparkle.

As such, the hotel’s brightly coloured glass façade leads to vibrant interiors, its rainbow hues – inspired by the nearby Jiuzhaigou National Park – layered with local references. Among the most notable features are mahjong motif tiles, an interactive LED virtual waterfall by interdisciplinary art collective teamLab, and artwork depicting Sichuan Opera actors with magnetic graffiti splashes. Even the panda – Chengdu’s iconic mascot – makes an appearance, sporting sunglasses and rendered in opalescent fibreglass.

The hotel’s playful vibe continues across its rooms and suites. The sprawling 368 sq m Extreme Wow Suite (the brand’s interpretation of the traditional presidential suite) features a sculptural bar and lounge area, while each room has customised panda cushions and teapots as well as bath amenities by sustainable, eco-friendly beauty brand Davines.

A foodie’s paradise

In following the brand’s ‘Work Hard, Play Harder’ mantra, wellness is at the forefront of the property’s offering. The Away Spa offers treatments using luxe beauty brands such as Biologique Recherche, Comfort Zone and I Plus Q, while the hotel’s Fit gym includes a 115 sq m Pilates Studio, and an indoor Wet swimming pool and Jacuzzi. Elsewhere, the hotel’s 2,600 sq m of flexible meeting spaces spans two floors and includes the 1,200 sq m pillar-less Great Room.

Unesco’s first City of Gastronomy in Asia, Chengdu’s reputation as a ‘World Gourmet Capital’ is further boosted by the property’s appealing restaurant and bar offerings. These include Yao Yen, which serves up a modern Cantonese and Sichuan menu, and Spark, a rooftop patio with sweeping city panoramas.

“Much like W, a brand that has redefined modern luxury, Chengdu is a city that is firmly in charge of writing its own narrative, fearlessly embracing the future through music, design, and global culture,” said Jennie Toh, vice president, brand, Asia Pacific, Marriott International. “With game-changing style and amplified entertainment and innovative culinary offerings, W Chengdu will inject a fresh vibe into the local hospitality scene and offer the most sought-after luxury getaway for locals as well as global jetsetters.”
