Region overview: Over 2,600 new hotels in APAC’s pipeline
The TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database reveals that 2,639 schemes are being planned across the APAC region, of which the majority are in China.
The hotel market in the APAC region will keep growing steadily in the coming years, our data indicates. Currently, 2,639 hotels with 622,841 rooms are being progressed across the region.
APAC hotel openings by year
2021 will be a busy year for APAC, with 820 hotel projects and 190,332 rooms due to go live in total. 2022 will be almost equally active, with 718 openings and 169,943 keys currently pencilled in.
Things will slow down a bit in 2023 as only 367 new properties with 84,470 rooms are expected to open then. For 2024 and beyond, another 734 projects and 178,096 keys are already on the books.
Of the 2,639 new hotels we’re tracking, 1,503 are in the four-star category – and 1,136 fall squarely into the five-star segment.
Key growth markets across APAC
China leads our rankings of the region’s most active countries by a huge margin – it’s set to welcome an astonishing 1,404 properties and 332,638 rooms. Australia comes a distant second with 182 hotels and 34,610 keys, while India completes the top three with 155 planned launches and 23,666 rooms.
Given China’s impressive pipeline, it’s perhaps little wonder that APAC’s three most dynamic urban growth markets are all in China.
Chengdu, the home of the giant panda, comes out ahead here with 60 new hotels bringing 13,295 rooms into play. The economic hub of Shanghai, meanwhile, will grow by 51 properties and 13,047 keys. And Xi’an, best known internationally for hosting the Terracotta Army, will get 46 additional projects with 9,719 rooms.

Hotel openings in APAC you need to know about
In Incheon, South Korea, the 1,250-room Inspire Integrated Entertainment Resort will begin welcoming guests in early 2022. It’ll be part of Mohegan Sun’s mixed-use development, which will boast a variety of lifestyle, entertainment and wellness amenities. Besides the hotel complex, there’ll be 20,000 sq m of luxury retail space, a beauty hub, a 15,000-seat event arena and an amusement park.
One of Vietnam’s most popular destinations, Ha Long Bay, will soon be home to yet another hotel meanwhile. Best Western Premier Sapphire Ha Long will open in Q3 this year, adding 1,008 rooms to Ha Long City’s hotel district. Guests can look forward to checking out its swimming pool, fitness centre, executive lounge and exciting dining options.
Over in the Philippines, Solaire Cruise Centre Resort & Casino is aiming to launch in Q3 2022. This sprawling property, set right next to the upcoming cruise pier and terminal along Manila Bay, is being extended to incorporate 800 guestrooms. Apart from direct access to the terminal, the property’s casino, yacht and charter-boat facilities promise to make it really stand out from the competition.
