More than 400 million tons of plastic are produced annually, of this approximately 36 per cent is used to make packaging of this a huge amount is only used once then ends up in the trash. According to a study by the WWF, a nationwide introduction of reusable concepts could reduce plastic waste by more than 20 percent in Germany by 2040.
Unfortunately, the potential of reusable packaging is still greatly underestimated. By simply avoiding disposable items and using packaging several times, for example by refilling, the amount of waste can be significantly reduced.
The implementation alliance “mehrweg.einfach.machen” (make reusable easy) tackles the challenges of reuse systems
KALDEWEI and WWF Germany will be continuing their relationship for another five years with their key focus being on the use of reusable products. The new model project aims to use reusable solutions to reduce plastic waste in the hotel, catering, retail and logistics sectors in Germany, where it is particularly high. At the same time, action should be taken at international level to establish reuse systems as an indispensable model for a functioning circular economy.
The first step is to seek exchange with the relevant stakeholders from politics, science and business in order to build an innovative network. To this end, WWF is working in the implementation alliance “mehrweg.einfach.machen” (make reusable easy). Here, the potential and challenges of reusable solutions are identified in order to implement the targeted measures in the relevant sectors. Consumers need to be made aware of the use of reusable solutions so it is important to communicate details of the the project to them to.
KALDEWEI and WWF Germany have been working together since 2017. As a sponsor of the WWF marine protection programme, KALDEWEI supported a model project in the Mekong Delta (Vietnam) from 2017 to 2022 to combat the causes of plastic waste in the world’s oceans. With this support, the WWF was able to set up a local waste collection and recycling system to prevent plastic waste from entering the sea. The project was so successful that it is now financed by public funds and is being continued by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection. It is already serving as a model for other regions in Southeast Asia.
