TOPHOTELPROJECTS’ hotel database shows that internationally branded resorts are set to dominate in Brazil over the next couple of years.
Brazil’s hospitality industry is going from strength to strength, according to figures from the TOPHOTELPROJECTS database.
We check out the top brands and projects that are destined for Brazil and run through some of the most important numbers for the country’s hospitality industry.
Busy in Brazil
It’s shaping up to be a busy 24 months in Brazil, judging by numbers pulled from the TOPHOTELPROJECTS database. An ever popular destination with tourists who flock to its exotic beaches and bustling cities, development in Brazil’s hospitality market looks set to speed up in 2020 and 2021, with 56 out of a total of 92 projects in the pipeline due to open this year and next (25 in 2020, 31 in 2021). The fact that 32 projects are in the planning phase, while 39 are currently under construction and a further eight projects are in the pre-opening phase means Brazil is on track to meet these targets, all going well, of course, with the ongoing coronavirus crisis. South America doesn’t seem to be hard hit, yet, but with winter approaching in the southern hemisphere, it remains to be seen how this pans out.
Cities and brands
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the most popular destination for hotel development in Brazil is the country’s sprawling urban metropolis of Sao Paulo. This vast city can accommodate many, many hotels, and out of the 69 in the pipeline, 17 of them will be in Sao Paulo, compared to just five in Rio de Janeiro, the second most popular city for development. Foz de Iguazu is third on the list with three new hotels to open in the coming years, owing to the presence of one of South America’s most in demand tourist destinations, the Iguazu Falls. The biggest brands are Hard Rock Hotels & Casinos with seven properties and Radisson Hotels & Resorts with five apiece. Hard Rock Hotels are popping up a lot recently in hospitality headlines, and the figures coming out from Brazil seem to confirm their current trajectory of development.
Notable projects
The Golden Gramado Laghetto Resort will be a 354-key property opening in the latter half of this year. Located in the city of Gramado, known for its unique Bavarian feel and Alpine constructions (owing to a wave of German immigration in the 19th century), the complex will consist of apart hotels and all the amenities that one would expect to find in a mountainous setting, such as saunas, fireside lounges and heated swimming pools.
The Hilton Garden Inn Sao Jose do Rio Preto is currently under construction and slated to open in the fourth quarter of 2022. This 134-key hotel located in Sao Paulo will be geared towards business travellers, given that it will be built within the Georgina Business Park, a corporate park that also employs sustainable initiatives and nature preservation, making it an innovative complex within the country.
Finally, the Bristol Parauapebas Hotel will form part of the New Carajás district in Parauapebas, a development which heralds a new quality of urban life for the city. 240 rooms will provide guests with the chance to connect with both natural and manmade nature, and offer easy access to the adjacent shopping mall, as well as panoramic views from the guest rooms, given that the building will be the highest point in the neighbourhood.
