Leading hospitality groups Accor and SBE have revealed that Mondrian Shoreditch London will launch in spring 2021 following an update and restyling of existing luxury property The Curtain.

Signifying Mondrian’s return to London, this announcement will create a new flagship hotel for the brand in Europe. From culinary concepts to a members club, we look into what will set this forthcoming hotel apart.

Collaboration and transformation

Accor and SBE have struck a deal to turn five-star London hotel The Curtain into a Mondrian property in collaboration with current owner Reuben Brothers. As well as marking the brand’s return to the UK capital, Mondrian Shoreditch London will become only the sixth property in its global portfolio.

“I am very proud to be working with the Reuben Brothers and Accor to take over such a prestigious property and to bring Mondrian back to London,” said Chadi Farhat, SBE chief operating officer. “The city has been and will continue to be such a thriving market for our lifestyle hospitality offerings, and I am very excited to re-establish Mondrian as one of London’s most innovative and glamorous destinations for hospitality, culinary and mixology experiences for locals and travellers alike.”

“The return of Mondrian to London marks a key moment in the brand’s development and reinforces our commitment to establishing the leading lifestyle brand in the heart of the most exciting cultural cities in the world,” added Gaurav Bhushan, CEO of Accor’s new Lifestyle division.

“We are delighted to be partnering with Accor and SBE to open a flagship Mondrian hotel in London,” Reuben Brothers concluded. “It demonstrates a firm belief in London continuing to be one of the most vibrant capitals in the world, highlighting Shoreditch in particular, and shows a commitment to the dynamic lifestyle hospitality sector in which the Mondrian brand is so prominent.”

A new culinary draw

SBE is to establish several signature food and beverage brands at the 120-key property, including a culinary experience by Michelin-starred chef Dania García. The hospitality group also plans to revive the rooftop lounge Rumpus Room and bring an award-winning mixology concept to the property, while The Curtain Members Club continues to operate under the same name.

“We look forward to establishing the property as the heart of the Shoreditch food scene in our first ever UK restaurant,” said García. “I have always been drawn to the magic and energy of London and this opportunity along SBE, Accor and the Reuben Brothers is a dream come true for us. We are humbled and honoured and look very much forward to welcoming guests into our restaurant at the soon-to-become-iconic Mondrian Shoreditch London.”

This project forms part of SBE and Accor’s plan to open ten new Mondrian hotels by 2022. The announcement follows the recent launch of Mondrian Seoul Itaewon and the decision to open Mondrian Bordeaux and Mondrian Cannes in 2021.

Mondrian’s return to London reflects the brand’s strategic expansion in partnership with Accor. Properties will soon be announced for Australia, the Dominican Republic, Germany, the Maldives, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. SBE plans to open 50 new hotels by 2022, including ten under the Mondrian brand.

Mondrian presents the consummate expression of a balancing act between apparent contradictions – entertainment and spirituality, cutting-edge style and simplicity, fantasy and reality.
