2022 hotlist: The Middle East’s top three openings
by Lauren Jade Hill | 25 Nov 2021 | Projects
Of the 230 schemes and 70,458 rooms under development across the region, according to the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database, these three really catch the eye.
A trio of landmark newbuild projects in Kuwait and Qatar stand out as some of the Middle East’s most exciting openings in 2022.
Fairmont Lusail Hotel, Qatar
In partnership with Katara Hospitality, Accor is set to launch Qatar’s first Fairmont hotel, which has been lined up for a landmark development that also includes a Raffles hotel and residences. The five-star, 361-key Fairmont Lusail Hotel promises to immerse guests in an authentically local environment within a striking two-tower structure representing the country’s national seal, a pair of scimitar swords.
Rising from a podium level, the arched towers will house residences, boutiques, restaurants and entertainment facilities in addition to the two luxury hotels. Kling Consult is behind this project’s architectural design and interiors, along with the illumination design and landscaping. Katara Hospitality will manage the property, which is expected to open in Q2 2022.
Grand Hyatt Kuwait
Hyatt Hotels Corporation and Tamdeen Group are working together to create Grand Hyatt Kuwait, part of the country’s luxury shopping destination 360 Mall. The scheme, which is currently under construction, lies seven miles from downtown and close to a number of embassies and government ministries, as well as Kuwait International Airport. Due to launch in Q2 2022, it’ll include 302 guestrooms, four dining and drinking venues, and event space catering for both business travellers and social occasions.
Callison RTKL is handling the hotel’s architectural design and Meyer Davis Studio is working on the interiors. Overall, the property aims to provide a sophisticated base for travellers to explore the surrounding area, with innovative design that draws on Kuwait’s cultural identity
Rixos Doha Qetaifan
Aimed at business, leisure and family travellers, this newbuild Rixos hotel is being created through a collaboration between Accor and Qetaifan Projects Company, a subsidiary of Katara Hospitality. It forms part of the Qetaifan Island North Project located off Lusail City, pairing a luxury resort environment with the historical, natural and cultural influences of Qatar. The property’s architecture is by Atkins – Dubai and the interiors are by Bluu UAE.
The five-star Rixos Doha Qetaifan will comprise 345 guestrooms and extensive amenities, including a souq, beach club, theme park and waterpark. Guests will also have access to The Icon Tower, soaring 82 m high. The hotel is expected to open in late 2022.
