IHG has strengthened its Spanish footprint with the opening of InterContinental Barcelona, which features a huge 1,200 sq m spa, following an extensive renovation programme.

Catalonia’s largest city has been buoyed by the opening of a new InterContinental-branded hotel.

A reflection of its location

In the heart of the Montjuïc district overlooking the harbour, the luxurious InterContinental Barcelona’s design takes inspiration from the Mediterranean Sea and the striking architecture that the city’s famous for. The 273-key property has opened following extensive renovation work on an existing property, and pays tribute to Barcelona’s heritage through its natural wood interiors with soft furnishings showcasing blue, ochre and neutral tones.

The influence of the city’s Jewish roots can be seen in the surrounding Montjuïc area, which draws travellers from across the globe to explore sites like the 1929-built Palau Nacional housing the National Museum of Catalan Art.

Enrique Escofet, general manager of InterContinental Barcelona, said: “InterContinental Hotels & Resorts has been pioneering luxury travel in new destinations and established, upmarket locations for 75 years. The brand is renowned for weaving modern luxury design through its collection of iconic properties globally and InterContinental Barcelona is a perfect example of how the brand can reimagine an existing property to exceed the expectation of the modern luxury traveller.”

Gastronomy and wellness

The hotel’s 273 guestrooms comprise 17 junior suites and a 180 sq m presidential suite, all with views over Barcelona.

Travellers can dine in Quirat, headed up by the youngest chef in Spain to achieve a Michelin star, Victor Torres, and Arrel, designed around the concept of roots being the source of vitality of the earth and produce. These restaurants are joined by the Gebre Cocktail and More bar, offering a selection of classic and signature cocktails, along with Boira Coffee Lounge and the 173 Rooftop Terrace with 360-degree views and a seasonal pool.

Meanwhile, guests can unwind in The Spa, one of the city’s most spacious at 1,200 sq m, with amenities including an expansive wet area, a hydrotherapy pool, jets and water beds, a steam bath, a sauna and a hammam, as well as six treatment rooms for Natura Bissé therapies.
