Cristóbal Domínguez Arrocha, Director at Room Mate Hotels, unveils the Spanish hotel groups’ plans to grow globally while remaining hip and sustainable.

Room Mate Hotels, the Spanish hotel chain founded and chaired by Kike Sarasola was born in 2005 as a new hotel concept focused on the customer, always in the best possible locations, with design, maximum comfort and a good money value.

In short, the hotel concept based on affordable luxury.

Room Mate wanted to be different and created spaces with inviting decorations, that made guests feel as if they were visiting a friend. Instead of frivolous extras, the hotel group focussed on basics such as a good breakfast and good WiFi, which earned them a strong young clientele.

They opened their first hotel, Room Mate Mariom in the center of Madrid next to the “Teatro Real” and never looked back.

On the sidelines of TOPHOTELWORLDTOUR Barcelona, Room Mate Hotels’ director Cristóbal Domínguez Arrocha shared the company’s philosophy and unveiled the Spanish hotel groups’ plans to grow globally while remaining hip and sustainable.

The philosophy behind Room Mate Hotels

Cristóbal: Our belief is that we need to focus on people, not only on clients. The key is questioning, challenging and not conforming. We think of our hotels as homes.

The best way to travel is to visit friends in every city; friends whose lifestyle we share, and friends that share their knowledge and experience while showing us their city. That is why each Room Mate hotel has a specific name and personality behind it.

Our motto is “The Visionary Brand” because we adapt to the changes of the future, before they reach us. We did it with our first hotels by providing free WiFi in our hotels and initiatives such as Wi Mate and BeMate Apartments.

How sustainability is always the at core

Cristóbal: There are no cons when speaking of sustainability, everything is a pro. There is no planet B. The Earth is our only home. Individually, we all share the same responsibility: respecting and taking care of it, not only for our well-being but also for the future generations.

At Room Mate Hotels, we understand the importance and the impact sustainability has on society. That is why we have an annual project called ECOLUTION. In this project, we actively work on reducing our impact on the planet. For example, this year we are aiming at an 80% reducement of plastic used in every hotel.

Room Mate’s expansion plans

Cristóbal: There are no limits for us. We opened hotels in Italy, France and México and will open very soon in Lisbon, Madrid and Mallorca, inaugurating our first beach hotel. We are always looking for new opportunities.

Cristóbal: I think it was an amazing experience. The format and the organization is very efficient. I would truly recommend it to all hotel industry colleagues.
