Created by a stellar team that includes Mathes Brierre Architects, CallisonRTKL Architects and Logan Killen Interiors, Virgin Hotels New Orleans boasts an impressive pedigree.

The lifestyle hotel brand by Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson has given guests a taste of what to expect at its forthcoming property, which will feature several F&B venues as well as a rooftop pool.

A reflection of the neighbourhood

Virgin Hotels New Orleans, which is scheduled to launch on Labor Day (6 September 2021), is appealingly located in the city’s Warehouse District amid a growing number of restaurants, galleries and shops. The newbuild occupies the 550 Baronne Street site near the Central Business District.

The hotel aims to tell the story of the neighborhood it’s in, helped by interiors from local firm Logan Killen Interiors. In particular, the property aims to stand out by combining a Southern residential feel paired with tropical architectural motifs and Virgin’s signature fun and smart style.

“With Virgin Group’s rich history in the music industry and our passion for food and culture, New Orleans is a natural fit for the expansion of the Virgin Hotels brand,” said James Bermingham, CEO of Virgin Hotels.

“Each of our hotels is rooted in the communities we serve, and Virgin Hotels New Orleans is no exception. We’re inspired by the city’s vibrant culture and have created a hotel that celebrates the local art, design and music in a uniquely Virgin way. We can’t wait to open our doors this Labor Day and invite both locals and visitors to join us for a truly personalised experience in the special city of New Orleans.”

Virgin Hotels New Orleans is being developed by Buccini/Pollin Group, which chose Mathes Brierre Architects, CallisonRTKL Architects and Broadmoor Construction to complete the property.

The brand’s signature lifestyle concept

Altogether, this new hotel will house 238 guestrooms, known as Chambers, which include Grand Chamber Suites and two penthouses. Richard’s Flat Penthouse, for example, spans 1,097 sq ft and features one master bedroom and a kitchenette, along with floor-to-ceiling windows providing views of downtown New Orleans.

Rooms will range from 294 to 592 sq ft in size, each bringing together local art with historical detailing and art deco-inspired elements. Virgin Hotels is known for its two signature Chamber layouts: The Dressing Room, which includes a vanity area, and The Lounge, featuring an ergonomically designed lounge bed, a red Smeg mini-fridge, a HD TV and a yoga mat. All rooms also come with integrated tech capabilities like custom lighting.

This accommodation is joined by several dining venues, not least the centrepiece restaurant, bar and lounge Commons Club, the 13th floor rooftop pool and lounge, and Funny Library Coffee Shop.

Commons Club is being designed to feel like a members-only experience with curated entertainment and music programming, while the rooftop pool and lounge will provide a panoramic setting for dining, drinking and dancing. The Funny Library Coffee Shop, meanwhile, will feature communal workspace and a variety of whimsical books and games.

Additional facilities will include a 24-hour fitness centre and more than 10,000 sq ft of event space. Guests can sign up for The Know loyalty programme for additional benefits like a complimentary cocktail hour.

This new hotel joins a rapidly expanding portfolio, which includes properties in Chicago, Dallas, Nashville and Las Vegas. Virgin Hotels New York is opening later this year, with more properties including hotels in Miami, Edinburgh and Glasgow launching in 2022 and beyond.
