Punta del Este’s iconic San Rafael Hotel is set to start life afresh as the Cipriani Ocean Resort & Club Residence.
Cipriani has invested $450m in an Uruguayan hotel and casino in the tourist haven of Punta del Este
Cipriani plans to pump a serious amount of money into the refurbishment of a Tudor-style property in one of Uruguay’s trendy beach resorts.
The renowned hospitality group has enlisted local architect-turned-international starchitect Rafael Viñoly to come up with the design.
We find out more.
Iconic hotel brought into the modern age
Punta del Este’s iconic San Rafael Hotel is getting a makeover. The beachfront property was designed in a Tudor style and inaugurated in 1948.
It has played host to some of the world’s most famous stars and dignitaries over the past 50 years. Now, it is set to start life afresh as the Cipriani Ocean Resort & Club Residence.
The hotel is to be the recipient of a $450m dollar investment, renovation and expansion, which will see it once again claim its place as the most glamorous property in an already glamorous area.
Cipriani has said of the development: “It includes the faithful reconstruction of the iconic hotel, once the glamorous destination for celebrities and politicians coming to Uruguay, as well as the preferred choice for South Americans and international visitors. The original design will be entirely preserved and complemented with beautiful residences, restaurants, spa, pools, boutiques and a casino.”
Stellar design on the Uruguayan coast
The hotel will appear completely transformed. While it will retain its important Tudor-esque facade, it will be joined by contemporary additions designed by famed Uruguayan architect Rafael Viñoly, who has completed projects all over the world.
The former San Rafael Hotel had fallen into disrepair but was not beyond salvation. The new design will retain many of the existing internal decorative elements, while at the same time adding modern touches and conveniences to the new hotel.
While Viñoly will be taking care of the exterior architecture of the new wings, which appear in the render as two linear volumes at right angles to each other, one suspended on top of the other, the interiors will be the responsibility of Florentine architect Michele Bönan, with local artists and artisans producing the furniture and art for the hotel, club and residences.
