Tribute Portfolio lands in Kyoto

Marriott International’s Tribute Portfolio brand has doubled its footprint in the Land of the Rising Sun with the opening of a boutique hotel in Japan’s former imperial capital.
Hiyori Chapter Kyoto aims to showcase the very best that this historic city has to offer in a serene setting.
Tribute Portfolio at the double
Tribute Portfolio, part of Marriott International, has successfully launched its sophomore offering in Japan, Hiyori Chapter Kyoto. Located near a major shopping street and the picturesque Kamo River, this 203-key boutique hotel is geared towards independent travellers who want to go off the beaten track and discover the city for themselves.
Satoshi Furuya, general manager of Hiyori Chapter Kyoto, said: “Kyoto is known for its cultural hotspots that are known to international travellers, but it also has many stories about back alleys, restaurants frequented by locals and other places not included in guidebooks. We look forward to providing an unforgettable experience for the modern traveller seeking local experiences and top-of-the-line customer service at the characterful Hiyori Chapter Kyoto.”
A design inspired by tea ceremonies
The property boasts 203 well-appointed guestrooms that include two signature suites, all of which are inspired by traditional Japanese tea ceremonies. These local rituals inform the design and decoration of the rooms, but are given a contemporary twist that combines style and practicality while still respecting the local culture.
Other highlights in the hotel include the lobby’s Chapter Factory, a social space that connects guests with the local community through carefully selected travel tales from natives and intrepid travellers alike, and a 24-hour fitness centre. Elsewhere, Matsunari is an all-day dining venue that offers guests a mixture of international and Japanese culinary fare, while Hiyori No Yu is an authentic Japanese public bath.
Jennifer Connell, vice president and global brand leader of Tribute Portfolio, which also has a property near Sapporo in Hokkaido, said: “We are delighted to be opening Hiyori Chapter Kyoto, introducing Tribute Portfolio to one of the most sought-after destinations around the globe. The opening further diversifies our exciting collection of hotels in Japan, offering unique experiences to our discerning guests.
“Tribute Portfolio seeks out and highlights the true spirit of a destination and creates vibrant social scenes for travellers to enjoy. The new hotel is set to present captivating design and truly authentic experiences tailored to the locale in Kyoto.”
