Leading professionals in the hotel industry have all had to overcome numerous hurdles and challenges to get to where they are today. At the latest TOPHOTELWORLDTOUR event, shares her insights as to how to deal with the mistakes and regrets of her career, and how she has used them as learning experiences that have shaped how she approaches her job.

About

Swiss-born is the founder and managing director of Strategic Hotel Consulting, an international management consulting firm that specialises in hotel and tourism investments. The company advises owners, investors, developers and operators on the best ways to maximise project investment, enhance asset value and optimise profitability. Ros has honed her career in hotel consulting and has extensive experience within the hospitality industry, and before founding Strategic Hotel Consulting she worked for Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels in Asia Pacific and with TRI Hospitality Consulting in the Middle East. She also has significant operational experience and has previously worked with the Four Seasons, Starwood and Rosewood hotel groups across the globe, occupying numerous positions in F&B, rooms division, revenue and yield management, sales and marketing and Six Sigma process improvement.

Beginnings and reflections

Ros has been in the consultancy business for nearly 15 years now, and so has had ample opportunity to assess the rights and wrongs of her career. She told us that one of her biggest mistakes was not being more reflective in the early stages of her career. As a dynamic person, she says that this characteristic was possibly something that could have been better managed when she was young and working in the operations side of the hotel industry. She says that she often jumped head first into certain situations without really taking the time to step back and assess what was going on, and this this lead to arriving too early at certain conclusions or solutions. She regrets not having had the perspective to appreciate different viewpoints and opinions. She thinks, though, that these are lessons learned with time and age and hopes that she more reflective these days.

Lessons learned

Ros says that one of the best ways to tackle a situation when it is first presented is to turn the mirror back on yourself instead of looking to other people for a solution. It is important to see your role within the bigger picture and to assess how this can be a contributing factor to the problems you are facing and how to solve them. One of her biggest pieces of career advice is to be conscious of how your behaviour can affect the outcome of a challenging situation.
