Boutique hotel owner Valerie Janczewski in her property Riad Anata in Fez, Morocco

Entrepreneur, globetrotter & owner of Riad Anata in Fez, Morocco, Valerie Janczewski shares with us her 5 favourite boutique hotels in the world along with her reasons why

Being an owner of a boutique hotel myself, I’m endlessly fascinated by discovering hidden gems around the world.

All my hotel selections are owned by couples — not investment funds — and have less than 10 rooms/villas per hotel. Here they are in no particular order.

Zanzibar White Sand Luxury Villas & Spa, Tanzania (€€€€)

A whole villa just for you with your own pool and an outdoor shower. A je-ne-sais-quoi cool, which may explain how the property maintains a hippie spirit despite being very luxurious. A true paradise where they even offer kitesurfing lessons.

Coqui Coqui, Mexico (€€€)

Bringing into the modern age the nostalgia of life in the tropics at the time of colonization, this property is basically a house with one room, a private pool, a spa and the out-of-this-world Coqui Coqui Perfumeria. Of course, the spa uses all local, all natural products. The fact that there is only one private room in this hotel is crazy – and novel!

Tongabezi Lodge, Zambia (€€€€)

Some 20km from the magnificent Victoria Falls, this is a hyper-romantic lodge ideal for honeymooners. Rooms open out to the Zambezi River –  it’s magic. The property is all about tranquility, luxury and simplicity, while the decor is ethnic-chic.

Tamu Koh Rong, Cambodia (€€)

To me, this place is a perfect blend of the bohemian spirit of Tulum and the nomad camps in Morocco. Breathtaking property alive with bohemian chic; all about luxury at an affordable price.

Hezen Cave Hotel, Turkey (€€)

Elegance, charm and refinement. Not too far away from the increasingly and incredibly popular hot air ballooning activity in Cappadocia, this unique cave hotel has an incredible view of the citadel of Ortahisar. Rates are affordable, staff super friendly.
