New look lobby at the Hyatt Andaz Hotel
Renowned hospitality design firm ara design International have really made their mark on the lobby of the Hyatt Andaz Hotel in London. This hotel was Andaz’s first branded property in Hyatt’s portfolio, so it holds a special place in the brand’s heart, so much so that the lobby area was handpicked for an extensive makeover, courtesy of the talented designers over at ara design.
The hotel is located in the hip centre of Shoreditch in London’s East End, and as such required a complete rethink to allow it to fit into this trendy hotspot.
Transport and infrastructure-inspired design
The design team was influenced by the infrastructure that this part of London is so famous for, with Liverpool Street rail and tube station sitting right beside the hotel, as well as the London Overground stations close by.
The transient nature of this huge transport hub contrasts to the lively, bohemian atmosphere of the small lanes and streets around Shoreditch, which are known for their markets, vintage clothes, underground bars and street food.
All of these stories are joined by the thread of Victorian London which can be found at every corner, especially near Spitalfields Market, within walking distance of the hotel.
ara design decided to bridge the gap between Victorian and contemporary London in their design, using graffiti to tell a story about London old and new through the ages.
The team behind the project spoke of the new lobby design, saying, “ The design helps the building integrate better than in its previous modern guise as it relates to the railway station next door which in its heyday was a major part of the property as guests could access the platforms directly from the hotel itself. The new Lobby has given some character back to not only the Hotel but to the area as a whole as it is seen as a hub for locals who can pop in for a drink, meet and listen to music by the resident DJ.”
