Covid19-related restrictions are starting to lift in some markets, paving the way for exciting new hotel openings from the likes of Hilton Worldwide, Accor and Millennium & Copthorne throughout August 2020.

So far, 2020 has been wild for reasons that we could never have predicted a few months ago, but nevertheless there are some stellar hotels due to open this month. Check out our rundown of the hottest openings over the coming four weeks, based on an exclusive analysis of the TOPHOTELPROJECTS construction database, and read up on the key stats and figures from the ever-changing hotel development landscape.

Hospitality industry welcomes back customers

As societies across the world ease themselves out of the first phase of Covid19 lockdowns, the hospitality industry has been starting to welcome customers back through the doors of hotels, restaurants and bars. Admittedly, many venues are doing so with some trepidation, lest clients get spooked about the safety of the public coming together once more or cases begin to rise again, but it’s happening nonetheless.

In terms of hotels, 246 new projects are set to launch around the world in August, bringing an additional 45,618 rooms onto the market. North America can claim the lion’s share of openings by region with 89 projects on the books, while Europe will gain 67 hotels in August and 59 properties will open in APAC.

Many US states are, for better or worse, ploughing ahead with reopening their economies and of course this includes hotels too, so perhaps it makes sense that the most properties opening in August will be located here. Of the 80 projects welcoming guests this month throughout the US, 15 have been lined up for Florida, 12 have been earmarked for California and six have been pencilled in for Arizona, though much will inevitably depend on the precise lockdown situations across each state at the time. If everything ran like clockwork, a total of 14,321 keys would be added to the US’s stock of hotel rooms this month.

Hilton to hit home run this August

Hilton Worldwide is the group with by far the most openings on the cards this August. The hospitality giant will unveil properties under its Hampton by Hilton (13 venues, 1,989 rooms), Doubletree by Hilton (seven venues, 1,471 rooms) and Home2 Suites by Hilton (seven venues, 657 rooms) brands this month.

In terms of cities, London looks set to be the busiest, with five hotels launching, giving the English capital 1,019 new keys. Hong Kong and Dubai will both welcome three new hotels each, meanwhile, adding 1,466 and 823 keys respectively.

Notable projects

There are plenty of notable projects due to come online throughout the month, including Copthorne Makkah Al Naseem, a 663-key property in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Strategically located just off the city’s central Ibrahim Al Khalil street, this four-star newbuild will span 65,000 sq m across 21 floors, and feature an onsite mosque, meeting and conference facilities, event halls and individual floors for F&B areas.

Switching our attention over to Scandinavia, a new property under the Comfort Hotels umbrella is expected to open near the Danish capital’s airport. Comfort Hotel Copenhagen Airport will be a 605-key, four-star development appealing to travellers looking for a no-frills experience akin to that of a ‘cool B&B’.

Finally, Sofitel Dubai Wapi is a five-star luxury newbuild that is set to launch imminently. Boasting 598 well-appointed rooms operating under Accor’s Sofitel brand, this property is likely to attract mainly business guests, who can avail themselves of the ample meeting and conference facilities for corporate events, before exploring the nearby Wafi Shopping Mall, Downtown Dubai, Business Bay and Dubai International Airport.
