The incredible Mandarin Oriental in Santiago, Chile

Mandarin Oriental Picks Chile as a Location for its First South American Property

Mandarin Oriental is coming to South America, and its doing so via what has become one of the safest hospitality markets on the entire continent.

Mandarin Oriental, which is a prominent global luxury hospitality operator, is not coming to one of the market’s one might expect in South America, places like the region’s massive cultural and financial hub, Sao Paulo, Brazil. In fact, it’s not coming to Brazil or Argentina at all, not as of yet, anyway. Instead, Mandarin Oriental’s first South American hotel property will be located over the mountains on the edge of the continent in tranquil Santiago, the capital of Chile.

More About Santiago, Chile

Despite being Chile’s capital, Santiago doesn’t quite have the glitz and glamor that might be found in larger Brazilian and Argentinian cities such as Sau Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, or Buenos Aires. As a result, it doesn’t typically have many wealthy travelers, either.

What Santiago, Chile lacks in ritzy visitors, however, it makes up for by also having a relative lack of crime. In fact, Mandarin Oriental officials have even said as much in interviews, noting that calm was the biggest factor in selection Santiago as the company looked to make its entrance into the Latin American market.

Mandarin Oriental’s South America Plans

With its impending debut in Santiago, Chile, Mandarin Oriental International Ltd. has big plans for its footprint in Latin America.

The Hong Kong-based hotel company is going to work diligently at full speed in order to refurbish a hotel that was most recently operated by Hyatt, aiming to be good to go with an early 2019 launch. Mandarin Oriental’s first Latin American property is slated to have 310 guest room and 52 suites, and it will be rebranded, of course, as Mandarin Oriental.

Continued Latin America Expansion

After debuting its first property in Santiago, Madarin Oriental will next look toward Chile’s coast, also opening a property in Vina Del Mar sometime in 2020.

This all fits into a larger expansion plan from Mandarin Oriental that will double the company’s hotel locations around the world. Officials high up in the company have said that they view Latin America as an obvious untapped market for this growth. Indeed, overall Chile is really a booming market for hotel expansion. The amount of disposable income within the country is growing, as are the number of international visitors have come each year to pay Chile a visit.

This tourism boom in Chile is being fueled by low crime, as well as by the countries diversity of locales, which includes metropolitan destinations such as Santiago, some of the best vineyards in the Western hemisphere, and a diverse set of geographical options, which includes astro tourism, hiking, and even faraway Easter Island, which is technically a part of the country. Just to give you a picture of the growth, hotel occupancy rates in Chile went up 68 percent last year, placing them among the highest in the region.
