The Creative Spark winner at TOPHOTELWORLDTOUR New York City, Stonehill Taylor, showed off an incredible new hotel with vintage touches throughout.

Architect Sara Duffy of Stonehill Taylor attended the recent TOPHOTELWORLDTOUR in New York City and represented the team behind the TWA Hotel project in the Creative Spark.

The Creative Spark competition is a staple of TOPHOTELWORLDTOUR events across the globe, and the attendees at the New York City event were thrilled to get a glimpse of a new and modern hospitality project with vintage touches throughout.

Creative Spark winner presents TWA Hotel

By popular vote, the TWA Hotel project captured top honours at the Creative Spark competition, which was voted on by the delegates in attendance.

This amazing property was a collaboration between Stonehill Taylor — which did the guest rooms, guest floors, lobby lounges, gym, retail and Connie airplane bar and lounge — and INC Architecture & Design — which did the event and function spaces.

A trip back to the Jet Age

This stunning new hotel had one inherent advantage — it was essentially a repurposing of a stunning building from another age.

The project was an amazing revamping of the famed Trans World Airlines Flight Centre designed by world-renowned architect Eero Saarinen and opened in 1962. Designated a New York City landmark in 1994, the building is on the premises of JFK Airport.

It has now been turned into a truly special hospitality experience, with the opening of the 512-key TWA Hotel in May 2019, paying homage to both Saarinen’s original design as well as the American Jet Age when it was developed.

Architect Duffy attributed her project’s success to the vast resources she had to work with. “This whole project we really had to think of editing, editing, editing, because we had way too much to work with,” she said.
